Mustangs Blank Sacramento State 4-0 In Friday Road Match

SACRAMENTO — The Cal Poly men's tennis team put together a dominant team effort Friday as they blanked Sacramento State 4-0 on the road for its second win in as many days.
The Mustangs (3-2) began the match by taking the doubles point from the Hornets (0-2) after winning all three matches during it. The No. 1 doubles team of redshirt senior Antoine Noel and redshirt freshman Joe Leather won their match first, taking it 6-2 for their second win of the season. The Mustangs' No. 3 pair of redshirt freshman Fernando Fonseca and redshirt junior Roman Shenkiryk then clinched the doubles point with a 6-2 victory in their first time playing as a tandem this season. Also getting a win was the No. 2 duo of redshirt sophomore Gary Vardanyan and freshman Noah Berry 6-4 to earn their second victory as a pairing.
In singles, Leather was the first to win his match, taking in straight sets at the No. 5 spot 6-2, 6-1. He is now 2-2 in singles competition this season.
Redshirt junior Alex Stater followed suit shortly thereafter at the No. 3 spot with a straight sets victory of his own, 6-2, 6-0. He is now a team-best 4-1 so far in singles this season.
The victory was then clinched for Cal Poly by Fonseca (pictured) after he earned a straight sets win at the No. 6 spot, 6-4, 6-3 to improve his singles record to 2-2.
The Mustangs will look to win their third match in a row on Sunday when they travel to face Fresno State at 12 p.m.
