Cal Poly Finishes Season This Week With Road Contests at UC Irvine, UC San Diego

SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. — Cal Poly will travel down to southern California to play its final two matches of the 2021 season this week against UC Irvine and UC San Diego.
The Mustangs (13-16, 11-7 BWC) will face UC Irvine on Friday at 7 p.m. and close the season against UC San Diego on Saturday at 5 p.m. Live video and stats will be available for both matches. Links can be found on the schedule page.
Cal Poly will be looking to snap a two-match losing streak following defeats last week to CSU Bakersfield and first-place Hawai'i. The Mustangs still sit in third-place in the Big West standings at 11-7, one game ahead of CSU Bakersfield at 10-8 and two games ahead of UC Irvine at 9-9.
In conference play, redshirt freshman Tommi Stockham continues to lead the Big West in kills per set at 4.00. She has finished with double figure kills in 13 of the last 15 matches and has five double-doubles this season.
Meanwhile, junior setter Avalon DeNecochea ranks second in the Big West during conference play in assists per set at 10.86 and has led the Mustangs to the third highest hitting percentage in the conference.
Freshman libero Peyton Dueck, who has twice been named Big West Defensive Player of the Week, ranks fifth in the Big West in digs per set at 4.11 and leads the conference in service aces with 40.
During conference play as a team, Cal Poly ranks third in the Big West in hitting percentage (.231), opponent hitting percentage (.179), and assists (12.29). They rank fourth in kills per set (13.31) and aces per set (1.29).
The Anteaters (16-12, 9-9 BWC) split a pair of matches last week, beating Cal State Fullerton 3-1 before losing to Long Beach State 0-3. UC Irvine is led by outside hitter Joy Umeh, who is second in the conference in kills per set at 3.78 during conference play. Also having a strong season is middle blocker Onye Ofoegbu who is averaging 3.17 kills per set for the season. UC Irvine won the first meeting of the season on Oct. 23 in San Luis Obispo 3-0.
The Tritons (10-19, 7-11 BWC) have lost three of their last four matches. However, they are coming off a five-set win over Cal State Fullerton on Saturday. They have been led this year by outside hitter Ava McInnes' 3.14 kills per set. Cal Poly won the first-ever meeting earlier this season in San Luis Obispo 3-2.
