Mustangs Earn 3-1 Road Win Over UC Irvine Friday

IRVINE, Calif. — Led by a balanced attack that saw four Mustangs with at least nine kills, the Cal Poly volleyball team picked up a 3-1 (25-21, 25-6, 20-25, 25-20) road victory over UC Irvine Friday.
Redshirt freshman outside hitter Amy Hiatt had a team-high 15 kills and a career-high six digs. Fellow redshirt freshman outside hitter Tommi Stockham recorded her sixth double-double of the season with 13 kills and 15 digs to go with two service aces. Junior middle blocker Meredith Phillips and junior outside hitter Kristina Jordan each finished with nine kills. Phillips also added a team-high six blocks while Jordan had four blocks.
Junior setter Avalon DeNecochea dished out 39 assists to go along with nine digs, four blocks, and four kills. Freshman libero Peyton Dueck finished with a match-high 24 digs, her sixth match this season with at least 20 digs.
As a team, the Mustangs (14-16, 12-7 BWC) outhit the Anteaters (16-13, 9-10 BWC) .233 to .115. Cal Poly also had more blocks (11 to 7), kills (55 to 42), aces (7 to 1), and digs (81 to 77). The Mustangs also sided-out at a 64-percent clip.
Cal Poly scored the first three points of the opening set. Later after UC Irvine took a 12-11 lead, they went on a 3-1 run to push their lead to 15-12. Down 16-13, the Mustangs regained the lead after scoring four straight points. Up 22-21, Cal Poly scored the next three points to win the set 25-22.
The second set was one of Cal Poly's most dominant sets of the season. They hit .609 as a team while holding the Anteaters to a -.103 hitting percentage and had a 100-percent sideout percentage (6-6). It was also the third time this season they held an opponent to less than 10 points in a set. The Mustangs got out to an 8-3 lead and later 14-4 before going on to win the set 25-6.
Cal Poly got out to a 9-4 lead to begin the third set. UC Irvine then went on a 10-4 run to take a 14-13 lead. With the Anteaters ahead 18-17, UC Irvine scored six straight points to pull away 24-17. Cal Poly scored three consecutive points to cut it to 24-20 before an Anteater block ended the set 25-20.
The Mustangs took a 4-1 lead to start the fourth set. UC Irvine then scored the next four points to take a 5-4 lead. With Cal Poly ahead 8-7, the Mustangs went on a 6-2 run to push their lead to 14-9. After the Anteaters got it as close as 15-12, Cal Poly never let them get any closer as they pushed their lead to as much as six at 22-16 before going on to win it 25-20 to clinch the match.
Cal Poly will head south to face UC San Diego Saturday at 5 p.m. for its final match of the season looking to seal a third-place Big West finish.
