Mustangs Conclude Season With Sweep of UC San Diego Saturday

LA JOLLA, Calif. — Behind one of its best defensive efforts of the season, the Cal Poly volleyball team concluded its 2021 season Saturday with a 3-0 (25-20, 25-17, 25-20) road sweep of UC San Diego.
The Mustangs finished the match holding the Tritons (10-21, 7-13 BWC) to a .019 hitting percentage, the lowest they held an opponent to all season. They also had 14 blocks as a team, their second-most in a match this season.
Redshirt freshman outside hitter Tommi Stockham led the team in kills with 14 to go along with seven digs. Fellow redshirt freshman outside hitter Amy Hiatt finished with 12 kills, five blocks, four digs, and two service aces.
Junior middle blocker Meredith Phillips added nine kills hitting .316 to go with six blocks. Defensive specialist Lea Ungar led the back row defense with a team-high 14 digs while also tying her career-high with four service aces.
Cal Poly started the match getting out to a 6-1 lead. UC San Diego eventually made its way back to within one at 9-8. Tied at 14-14, the Mustangs scored three consecutive points to go ahead 17-14. The Tritons got it back to 17-16 before Cal Poly once again scored three in a row to push their lead to four. UCSD then answered with three straight points to make it 20-19 before the Mustangs finished the set on a 5-1 run to take the set 25-20.
Cal Poly once again got out to an early lead to begin the second set at 6-3. Leading 9-6, a 7-2 run by the Mustangs made it 16-8. Cal Poly extended its lead to as much as 10 points at 21-11 before going on to win the set 25-17.
In the third set it was the Tritons who took an early 6-3 lead. The Mustangs then used a 7-1 run to go ahead 10-7. Leading 17-16 later in the set, Cal Poly scored four straight points to pull away 21-16. Up 24-20, a kill by Hiatt sealed the set win to complete the sweep for the Mustangs.
Cal Poly ends its season with an overall record of 15-16 and a conference mark of 13-7. They finished third in the Big West standings this year to mark the sixth consecutive season they have finished in the top three of the standings.
