Cal Poly Drops Overtime SoCal Challenge Matchup to Nicholls State
11/22/2021 3:02:00 PM | Men's Basketball
SAN JUAN CAPISTRANO – Junior forward Alimamy Koroma finished with a career best 23 points to top four double-digit Mustang scorers Monday afternoon, but the Cal Poly men's basketball program – after conceding a 17-0, second-half run to first-time opponent Nicholls State – dropped a 75-72, overtime decision in the SoCal Challenge Sand Bracket opener inside the JSerra Pavilion in San Juan Capistrano, Calif.
Sophomore point guard Camren Pierce added a season best 11 points while sophomore forward Kyle Colvin and freshman forward Julien Franklin each finished with 10 for Cal Poly (1-4), which led Nicholls State (4-2) by 11 points early in the second half before the Colonels surged ahead with the 17-0 run.
Still trailing with 108 seconds to play, 62-59, Cal Poly forced a missed Nicholls State layup before a Colvin pullup jumper brought the Mustangs within a point. After another missed shot from the Colonels, Pierce was fouled attempting the go-ahead bucket. He missed his first free throw, but buried the second to tie the matchup before Nicholls State fell short with a three-pointer as regulation time expired.
With Cal Poly playing just its second overtime game in as many seasons, the Mustangs twice scratched out a pair of two-point leads before a three-pointer from Nicholls State guard Jalen White handed his side a 73-72 advantage. Cal Poly committed its 18th turnover of the afternoon during the next possession and, with the Mustangs forced to foul, Colonels guard Pierce Spencer sank two free throws to reach the final scoreline.
During Monday's final possession, Cal Poly junior guard Trevon Taylor – who scored nine points and grabbed nine rebounds – had a potential game-tying three-pointer blocked.
With Monday's loss, Cal Poly will face Idaho in Wednesday's Sand Bracket third place matchup at 12 noon. Nicholls State, meanwhile, will face Utah Valley in Wednesday's championship game.
During Monday's matchup, Cal Poly broke the last of four early tied scorelines as a Koroma jumper handed the Mustangs a 21-19 lead with five-and-a-half minutes remaining before the break.
Koroma added another basket a minute later before Pierce followed with a jumper as Cal Poly closed the opening period with a 8-2 run to lead 27-21 entering halftime.
Cal Poly then increased the lead to 35-24 with 17-and-a-half minutes remaining.
The Mustangs, however, were then kept without a point for the next four minutes with the corresponding 17-0 run from Nicholls State providing the Colonels a 41-35 advantage.
A Koroma free throw and layup curtailed the run and Cal Poly cut the Nicholls State lead to a single possession eight more times before Colvin's layup trimmed the deficit to 62-61 with 67 seconds remaining.
