11/20/2021 11:41:00 PM | Women's Volleyball
SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. — Cal Poly kept it close in each set but the Mustangs fell to first-place Hawai'i 0-3 (25-22, 25-18, 25-20) in the final home match of the season Saturday night at Mott Athletics Center.
The Mustangs (13-16, 11-7 BWC) were led offensively by redshirt freshman outside hitter Tommi Stockham's nine kills. Junior middle blocker Meredith Phillips and redshirt freshman outside hitter Amy Hiatt each finished with six kills. Phillips also had a team-high six blocks. Junior setter Avalon DeNecochea finished with 28 assists, five digs, and four kills. Freshman libero Peyton Dueck had a team-high 15 digs while defensive specialist Lea Ungar added 10 digs.
The Rainbow Wahine (20-6, 17-1 BWC) had four players that ended up with at least seven kills. They were led by sophomore middle blocker Amber Igiede's 10 kills and six blocks.
Following a ceremony that celebrated Cal Poly's four seniors - Nicole Cavote, Taylor Rose, Jamie Stivers, and Lea Ungar - the Mustangs got out to an 8-2 lead to start the first set. With the Mustangs leading 12-6, Hawai'i went on an 8-2 run to tie it 14-14. They went back-and-forth from there until, with Hawai'i ahead 23-22, back-to-back kills by Hawai'i won them the set 25-22.
Tied at 4-4 in the second set, Hawai'i scored three consecutive points to go up 7-4. Although Cal Poly continued to keep it close from there, the Rainbow Wahine never trailed again. With Hawai'i leading 10-8, a 7-2 run pushed their lead to 17-10. Hawai'i led by as many as eight before going on to win the set 25-18.
Similar to how the first set began, Cal Poly got out to a 4-1 lead to start the third set. Hawai'i quickly bounced back with an 11-2 run to take a 12-6 lead. The Rainbow Wahine held a 16-9 advantage before the Mustangs came back with a 9-2 run to tie it 18-18. From there, Hawai'i scored the next three points before Cal Poly scored the following two points to cut the lead to 21-20. However, that's as close as they would get as Hawai'i scored the next four points to win the set 25-20 and clinch the match.
Cal Poly still sits in third place in the Big West standings with a one-match lead over fourth-place CSU Bakersfield. The Mustangs will finish the season next week on the road. They will face UC Irvine on Friday at 7 p.m. and UC San Diego on Saturday at 5 p.m.
