11/19/2021 8:29:00 PM | Men's Basketball
SANTA CLARA – Sophomore guard Kyle Colvin (above) finished with a team leading 18 points Friday evening, but the Cal Poly men's basketball program trailed Santa Clara from the outset and opened the inaugural SoCal Challenge and a nine-game road trip with an 87-57 loss to the Broncos inside the Leavey Center.
Sophomore forward Alimamy Koroma, sophomore guard Kobe Sanders and freshman guard Julien Franklin each added nine points for Cal Poly (1-3), which started its lengthiest road trip in 51 years by limiting Santa Clara (4-0) to a 29.2 (7-for-24) percent three-point mark. Cal Poly, however, committed 20 turnovers.
SoCal Challenge action next shifts to the JSerra Pavilion (San Juan Capistrano, Calif.) as Cal Poly opens the four-team Sand Bracket against first-time opponent Nicholls State on Monday, Nov. 22 at 12 noon. The Cal Poly-Nicholls State winner faces either Idaho or Utah Valley in the SoCal Challenge Sand Bracket title game on Wednesday, Nov. 24; the losing sides plays in the third-place game on the same date.
With Colvin sinking a pair of three-pointers inside the opening five minutes, Cal Poly deadlocked Santa Clara early, 6-6.
Santa Clara, however, answered with a 13-0 run and, in keeping Cal Poly scoreless for eight minutes, the Broncos established their first double-digit lead at 19-6.
Colvin's third three-pointer of the evening snapped Cal Poly's scoring drought and his fourth – with five minutes remaining in the first half – cut Santa Clara's lead to 25-17. That was as close as the Mustangs closed the remainder of the night with Santa Clara taking a 34-21 lead into the break.
Santa Clara then scored 16 of the opening 22 second-half points to go up 50-27 with 15-and-a-half minutes to play.
