Cal Poly Edged by Sacramento State in Final Seconds, 58-57
11/15/2021 10:03:00 PM | Men's Basketball
SAN LUIS OBISPO – Junior forward Alimamy Koroma scored a game high 19 points, but it was a three-point play from Sacramento State guard Bryce Fowler with six seconds remaining that decided Monday evening's matchup inside Mott Athletics Center as the Cal Poly men's basketball program dropped a 58-57 decision to the Hornets.
Junior guard Trevon Taylor (above) added 15 points and a collegiate best 10 rebounds to record his first career double-double for Cal Poly (1-2), which went up, 57-55, with 82 seconds remaining after sophomore guard Camren Pierce knocked down two free throws.
With Koroma forcing Fowler into a turnover on the ensuing possession, Pierce missed a jumper with 36 seconds to go. Mustang freshman guard Julien Franklin grabbed the rebound, but was disposed by forward Cameron Wilbon as Sacramento State regained possession with 31 seconds on the clock.
On the game's penultimate possession, Fowler drove the lane, rolled in a lay-up and – with Koroma whistled for a foul – sank his free throw attempt to complete the three-point play.
Mustang graduate guard Jacob Davison, who finished with 10 points, missed a jumper as time expired.
Cal Poly, which completed a season-opening, three-game home stand Monday evening, outrebounded Sacramento State (2-1), 39-28.
Embarking next on a nine-game road trip, Cal Poly opens the inaugural SoCal Challenge with a Friday, Nov. 19 matchup at Santa Clara. Tip time is 6 p.m. for Cal Poly, which resumes SoCal Challenge play on Monday, Nov. 22 versus Nicholls State at the JSerra Pavilion in San Juan Capistrano, Calif.
With Taylor supplying eight early points, Cal Poly carved out a 19-15 lead with eight-and-a-half minutes remaining in the opening half.
Despite being held to just three field goals the remainder of the half, Cal Poly – which limited Sacramento State to a 30.4 (7-for-23) percent field goal mark in the opening period – took a 26-22 lead into the break.
The Hornets, however, sank their first three shot attempts out of halftime with a three-pointer from guard William Fitzpatrick handing his side a 29-26 lead after two minutes.
Koroma sank a jumper on Cal Poly's next possession to bring the deficit back down to a solitary point before another basket – his third of the half – handed the Mustangs a 36-35 lead with 13 minutes to play.
Cal Poly still led, 44-43, with eight-and-a-half minutes remaining before a 10-3 run from the Hornets helped Sacramento State match its largest lead of evening at 53-47.
