Mustangs Fall to Cal State Fullerton in Five-Sets Friday

SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. — Redshirt freshman outside hitter Tommi Stockham and junior setter Avalon DeNecochea each recorded double-doubles but the Cal Poly volleyball team fell to Cal State Fullerton 3-2 (26-24, 22-25, 23-25, 25-20, 15-7) Friday night at Mott Athletics Center.
Stockham had a season-high 23 kills hitting .250 while also adding 14 digs for her second double-double of the year. DeNecochea dished out 54 assists and had a season-high 13 digs. Redshirt freshman outside hitter Amy Hiatt had a career-high 21 kills while hitting .229 to mark her fourth match this season with double-digit kills. Junior middle blocker Meredith Phillips added 13 kills and a career-high four digs. Defensively, freshman libero Peyton Dueck had a team-high 23 digs while junior defensive specialist Lea Ungar contributed 13 digs.
The Titans (9-9, 6-5 BWC) also had three players score double-digit kills. They were led on the night by outside hitter Julia Crawford's double-double of 17 kills and 13 digs.
The two teams were pretty even statistically for the match except for in one category. Cal State Fullerton had 11 service aces and 10 service errors while the Mustangs (9-13, 7-4 BWC) had two service aces and 13 service errors.
Cal Poly got out to a 6-3 lead to begin the first set. The Titans then cut it to 8-7 after a 5-2 run. The teams went back-and-forth from there until tied at 18, the Mustangs went on a 4-1 run to go ahead 22-19. Fullerton responded with consecutive points to make it a one point game. With the Mustangs holding set point at 24-22, the Titans rattled off four straight points to win the set 26-24.
Cal Poly once again started strong in the second set, getting out to a 6-3 lead. Fullerton crawled its way back to eventually get it to a one point game at 9-8. The two teams continued to trade blows late into the set as there were a total of nine ties and five lead changes. Trailing 19-20, the Mustangs scored four of the next five points via Amy Hiatt kills to go up 23-21. With Cal Poly ahead 24-22, Hiatt sealed the set for the Mustangs with another kill to win it 25-22. In the second set, Hiatt and Stockham each had eight kills to account for 16 of Cal Poly's 19 kills for the set.
The third set was another tight one with 10 ties and three lead changes. The Titans went ahead 10-7 before the Mustangs answered with a 4-1 run to even things up at 11 apiece. Tied at 15, Cal Poly went on a 5-2 run to take a 20-17 lead before Fullerton responded with a 5-2 run of their own to tie things at 22. Not phased, the Mustangs then finished the set on a 3-1 run to win it 25-23.
In the fourth set, Cal Poly took an early 4-1 lead before the Titans scored three straight to tie it. With the Mustangs later ahead 9-6, Fullerton scored nine consecutive points to go up 15-9. From there, Cal Poly never got closer than within four points and the Titans went on to win the set 25-20.
