Stockham, Hiatt Lead Cal Poly to Sweep of Long Beach State Saturday

SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. — Redshirt freshmen outside hitters Tommi Stockham and Amy Hiatt each had double-digit kills to help lead the Cal Poly volleyball team to a 3-0 (25-13, 25-23, 26-24) sweep of Long Beach State Saturday night at Mott Athletics Center.
Stockham had a match-high 14 kills while hitting .367, her sixth match in a row recording double-digit kills. She also added seven digs and a pair of service aces. Hiatt was right behind her with 13 kills hitting .286. Junior middle blocker Meredith Phillips added nine kills on a career-high hitting percentage of .692 as well as a pair of blocks. Junior setter Avalon DeNecochea had 40 assists as well as six digs.
As a team, the Mustangs (10-13, 8-4 BWC) outhit Long Beach State (9-14, 3-9 BWC) .343 to .224. Cal Poly also sided-out at a 70-percent rate.
The Mustangs came out firing on all cylinders in the first set, hitting .522 without any attack errors and held Long Beach State to a .000 hitting percentage. Cal Poly got out to an 11-3 to start and later lead as much as 19-6 and later 24-10. Long Beach State went on a late run of three consecutive points before a Hiatt kill sealed the set for the Mustangs 25-13.
It was a much tighter second set. Long Beach State took a 4-1 lead to begin before Cal Poly later tied things at 7 apiece. The teams traded points from there until tied at 14, the Mustangs scored three straight points to take a 17-14 lead. Long Beach State answered with a 6-3 run to even the score at 20. Tied at 22, Cal Poly finished the set scoring three of the next four points to win it 25-23.
The third set was even more back-and-forth with 19 ties and eight lead changes. Long Beach State took a 7-4 lead before a 4-1 run by the Mustangs tied it at 8. From there, neither team held a lead of more than two points. Tied at 24, Stockham's 14th kill of the match put Cal Poly ahead 25-24. The match was then clinched by the Mustangs after an attack error by Long Beach State to win it 26-24.
Now with an 8-4 record in the Big West and still sitting in third, Cal Poly will go back on the road next week to face 10th place CSUN on Friday and UC Santa Barbara on Saturday who is tied for first with Hawai'i in the conference standings. Both matches start at 7 p.m.
