Mustangs Drop Road Contest at CSUN Friday, 1-3

NORTHRIDGE, Calif. — Redshirt freshman outside hitter Tommi Stockham matched her career-high for kills while recording a double-double but the Cal Poly volleyball team fell on the road Friday night in Northridge to CSUN 1-3 (25-22, 25-21, 13-25, 25-23).
Stockham had 26 kills, tying her career-high she set last year at Indiana, while hitting .308 and recording her third double-double of the season with 11 digs. Fellow redshirt freshman outside hitter Amy Hiatt had nine kills, redshirt sophomore outside hitter Nicole Cavote added eight kills. Junior setter Avalon DeNecochea finished with 47 assists while freshman libero Peyton Dueck led the team in digs with 16.
While the Mustangs (10-14, 8-5 BWC) outhit the Matadors (5-18, 4-9 BWC) .261 to .208, CSUN had 10 blocks to Cal Poly's three and also had more aces and fewer service errors than the Mustangs.
In the first set, Cal Poly took a 9-5 lead before CSUN went on an 8-1 run to go ahead 13-10. The Mustangs answered with an 8-3 run of their own to regain the lead 18-16. With Cal Poly leading 20-18, the Matadors finished the set on a 7-2 run to win it 25-22.
The second set was back-and-forth early. After CSUN took a 13-9 lead, the Mustangs scored four consecutive points to even it up at 13. Later with Cal Poly ahead 18-17, the two teams traded runs of three straight points to keep the Mustangs up 21-20. CSUN then scored the next five points to win the set 25-21.
Cal Poly bounced back in the third set, hitting .394 and held the lead the entire game. The Mustangs scored the first four points of the set and took a 7-1 lead. CSUN got as close as 8-5 but Cal Poly later extended its lead to as much as 13 before going on to win the set 25-13.
In the fourth set, the Matadors took a 6-3 lead before the Mustangs scored three straight points to tie it at 6. Tied at 9, four unanswered points by CSUN put them ahead 13-9. Cal Poly got it back to within one at 14-13 and the two teams went back-and-forth from there until, with CSUN ahead 18-17, they scored three straight points to take a 21-17 lead. They eventually went ahead 23-18 before the Mustangs rallied by scoring four points in a row to cut it to 23-22. However, CSUN went on to score two of the next three points to win it 25-23.
Now at 8-5, the Mustangs remain in third-place in the Big West standings as they travel to face UC Santa Barbara on Saturday who is tied for first with Hawai'i at 12-1.
