Block Party Leads Mustangs to 3-1 Win Over UCSB Saturday

ISLA VISTA, Calif. — Behind a season-high 15 blocks as a team and an overall strong defensive effort, the Cal Poly volleyball team pulled off a 3-1 (22-25, 25-20, 25-16, 25-22) victory over UC Santa Barbara Friday night inside the Thunderdome to hand the Gauchos (16-10, 12-2 BWC) their second loss of conference play.Tommi Stockham nearly had a double-double with a match-high 20 kills and nine digs. Junior middle blocker Meredith Phillips had another extremely efficient night, collecting 14 kills while hitting .550 to go with six blocks and a season-high five digs. Redshirt sophomore outside hitter Nicole Cavote, who got her second start in a row, added seven kills, six digs and three blocks. Junior setter Avalon DeNecochea dished out 47 assists to go along with five blocks and four digs.
The win, which was Cal Poly's first four set victory of the season, keeps them in third in the Big West standings at 9-5 as they get set to play three of their next four matches at home.
The Gauchos got out to a 6-1 lead to start the first set before the Mustangs rattled off five straight points to tie it. Later with Cal Poly up 13-12, UCSB went on an 8-1 run to go ahead 20-14. The Mustangs answered back with an 8-2 run to tie it at 22. However, the Gauchos then scored the next three points to win it 25-22.
Tied at 4-4 in the second set, UCSB scored four consecutive points to go ahead 8-4. Cal Poly then tied it at 9-9 after a 5-1 run. Tied at 16 later in the set, the Mustangs scored four points in a row to get to 20-16. The Gauchos got back-to-back points to cut it to within two before Cal Poly finished the set on a 5-2 run to win it 25-20.
The Mustangs' most dominant set was third, holding UCSB to a -.054 hitting percentage and never trailed. Tied at 5-5, Cal Poly went on a 5-1 run to go ahead 10-6. The Gauchos got it back to as close as 15-13 before the Mustangs scored seven straight points to pull away for good 22-13 and went on to win it 25-16.
The fourth set was the tightest of the night with 13 ties and six lead changes throughout. Tied at 4-4, Cal Poly scored three straight points before UCSB responded with three points in a row. The teams traded points from there until, down 18-17, Cal Poly went on a 5-1 run to take the lead 22-19. The Gauchos scored back-to-back points to make it 22-21 before the Mustangs finished the set on a 3-1 run to win it 25-22 and clinch the match.
Cal Poly returns to Mott Athletics Center next week for a pair of matches. The Mustangs will take on UC Davis on Friday, Nov. 12 at 7 p.m. and UC Riverside on Saturday, Nov. 13 at 2 p.m.
The blocks were a main part of how the Mustangs (11-14, 9-5 BWC) were able to hold UCSB to a season-low hitting percentage of .097 and come back to win the match after dropping the first set for the first time this season.
