Mustangs Take Down UC Davis in Four Sets Friday

SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. — Behind redshirt freshman outside hitter Tommi Stockham's fourth double-double of the season, the Cal Poly volleyball team defeated UC Davis 3-1 (25-21, 21-25, 25-19, 28-26) Friday night at Mott Athletics Center.
Stockham, the reigning Big West Offensive Player and Freshman of the Week, once again led the Mustangs offensively with a match-high 20 kills to go along with 12 digs. Fellow redshirt freshman outside hitter Amy Hiatt came off the bench to add 12 kills and three blocks while freshman outside hitter Annabelle Thalken also came off the bench and finished with seven kills while hitting .353 to tie her career-high.
Redshirt freshman middle blocker Kate Slack had six kills while hitting .429 and also had a team-high five blocks. Junior setter Avalon DeNecochea did a little bit of everything for Cal Poly, finishing with 47 assists, eight digs, five kills on seven attempts, and four blocks. Defensively in the back row, freshman libero Peyton Dueck tied her career-high with 28 digs to go along with a pair of service aces.
As a team, the Mustangs (12-14, 10-5 BWC) held the Aggies (10-16, 6-9 BWC) to just a .099 hitting percentage while recording eight blocks.
In the first set, Cal Poly got out to a 9-5 lead before UC Davis climbed its way back to eventually tie it at 13-13. Tied at 15, the Mustangs went on a 5-2 run to take a 20-17 lead. The Aggies scored the next point but that is as close as they would get as with Cal Poly ahead 23-20, the Mustangs scored two of the next three points to win the set 25-21.
In the second set it was UC Davis this time getting out to a 9-5 lead and eventually as much as 15-6. However, the Mustangs cut the deficit to 15-12 after scoring six unanswered points. UC Davis then got their lead back up to 18-12 after scoring three straight points. From there, Cal Poly never got it back to closer than four points as the Aggies went on to win the set 25-21.
Cal Poly saved its best offensive set for the third, hitting .406. UC Davis took an 8-4 lead before the Mustangs battled back to take a 12-8 lead after scoring eight straight points. Cal Poly never relinquished the lead from there, going up by as much as eight before winning the set 25-19.
The fourth set was the tightest of the match, with eight ties and six lead changes. With the Mustangs leading 7-5, Cal Poly used a 6-2 run to take a 13-7 advantage. The Aggies followed that up with a 9-3 run to tie it at 16-16. Later with the Mustangs ahead 19-18, UC Davis scored four in a row to go up 22-19. Cal Poly then battled back with a 4-1 run to tie it at 23-23. The teams traded points from there until tied at 26, a kill by Hiatt followed by a kill from Stockham sealed the match for the Mustangs.
Having now won three of their last four matches, the Mustangs will look to keep their momentum going Saturday for a 2 p.m. match against UC Riverside at Mott Athletics Center.
