Mustangs Beat UC Riverside 3-1 to Earn Third Straight Win

SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. — Behind a balanced offensive attack that saw four Mustangs finish with double-digit kills, the Cal Poly volleyball team took down UC Riverside 3-1 (25-20, 25-19, 22-25, 25-22) Saturday at Mott Athletics Center to earn their third straight win.Kate Slack set a career-high with 12 kills while hitting a very efficient .556 to go with two blocks. Redshirt freshman outside hitter Tommi Stockham recorded her fifth double-double of the season, finishing with 11 kills and a season-high 18 digs while fellow redshirt freshman outside hitter Amy Hiatt chipped in 10 kills and three blocks.
Junior setter Avalon DeNecochea also recorded a double-double for the third time this season, dishing out 50 assists to go along with 11 digs and a pair of service aces. Defensively in the back row, freshman libero had 12 digs and two aces while junior defensive specialists Lea Ungar and Taylor Rose finished with 11 digs and 10 digs.
As a team, the Mustangs (13-14, 11-5 BWC) outhit the Highlanders (6-20, 2-14 BWC) .259 to .185. Cal Poly also had more digs, kills, assists, and service aces.
In the first set, UC Riverside got out to a 5-2 lead before the Mustangs responded back with a 5-2 run of their own to tie it at 7-7. Tied at 9, Cal Poly went on a 7-2 run to go ahead 16-11. From there, the Highlanders never got closer than within four as Cal Poly went on to win the set 25-20.
In the second set it was Cal Poly the team that got out to a 5-2 lead before UC Riverside was the responding team going on a 5-2 run to tie it at 7-7. Tied at 9, Cal Poly used a 6-2 run to take a 15-11 advantage. Later with the Mustangs holding a 17-13 lead, six straight points extended their lead to 23-13. UC Riverside came back with a 6-1 run before a kill by Hiatt finished the set for Cal Poly 25-19.
The Mustangs started the third set by scoring the first four points. UC Riverside eventually came back to tie it at 9-9. With Cal Poly ahead 14-13, the Highlanders scored five unanswered points to take the lead at 18-14. Down 21-16, Cal Poly got it back to within two after a 5-2 run to make it 23-21. After trading points, a service error by Cal Poly won the set for UC Riverside 25-22.
After Cal Poly took a 4-2 lead to begin the fourth set, UC Riverside scored seven consecutive points to take a 9-4 lead. Down 15-10, the Mustangs made their comeback with a 7-1 run to regain the lead 17-16. With Cal Poly holding a 21-20 lead, the Mustangs scored back-to-back points to make it 23-20. At 24-22, an attack error by the Highlanders clinched the set and the match for Cal Poly 25-22.
Now a 11-5 in conference play, the Mustangs still have a hold on third-place in the Big West standings. They will travel to take on fourth-place CSU Bakersfield on Tuesday, Nov. 16 at 5 p.m.
