CSU Bakersfield Tops Cal Poly Tuesday, 3-1

BAKERSFIELD, Calif. — Redshirt freshman outside hitter Tommi Stockham had a match-high 19 kills and eight digs but the Cal Poly volleyball team fell on the road Tuesday night to CSU Bakersfield 3-1 (25-14, 25-21, 12-25, 25-22).
It was Stockham's 11th match in a row with double-digit kills as she hit .277 for the match and had 16 kills after the first set. Fellow redshirt freshman outside hitter Amy Hiatt also had double-digit kills with 10. Freshman libero Peyton Dueck led the Mustangs (13-15, 11-6 BWC) with 16 digs. Junior defensive specialist Lea Ungar had a career-high four service aces as well as eight digs.
Junior setter Avalon DeNecochea finished with a match-high 35 assists to move up in the Cal Poly record books into sixth place for all-time career assists with 3,088. She also had five digs, three kills and three aces in the match.
Despite the Mustangs outhitting the Roadrunners (17-8, 10-7 BWC) .215 to .197, CSU Bakersfield had more blocks (10 to six) and fewer service errors (12 to five).
The Roadrunners were led on the night by Brooke Boiseau, who had 13 kills, and Hana Makonova, who had 10 kills and a match-high six blocks.
After Cal Poly took a 4-1 lead to begin the first set, CSU Bakersfield went on an 8-2 run to go ahead 9-6. Three straight points by the Mustangs made it 10-9 until the Roadrunners answered with three in a row to make it 13-9. A 5-2 run by Cal Poly got them back within two points at 16-14 before CSU Bakersfield ended the set by scoring nine consecutive points to win it 25-14.
It was back-and-forth in the second set until, tied 9-9, CSU Bakersfield scored seven straight points to take a 16-9 lead. Trailing 22-15, the Mustangs rattled off five consecutive points to make it 22-20. However, that is as close as they would get as CSU Bakersfield went on to win the set 25-21.
Cal Poly came out firing on all cylinders to start the third, scoring the first eight points and got out to a 12-1 lead. The Mustangs took their largest lead of 13 at 19-6. CSU Bakersfield never got closer than within eight points as Cal Poly hit .370 in the set and won it 25-12.
After CSU Bakersfield took a 9-6 lead in the fourth set, the Mustangs scored five points in a row to go up 11-9. Leading 13-11, a 4-1 run by Cal Poly pushed its lead to 17-12. The Roadrunners then cut the lead to 17-16 after scoring four consecutive points. The Mustangs held a 20-17 advantage until CSU Bakersfield scored six straight points to regain the lead 23-20. Cal Poly got it to 24-22 before a service error by the Mustangs won it for the Roadrunners 25-22.
Cal Poly will now prepare for its final home match of the season on Saturday against Hawai'i at 8 p.m. The Mustangs have beat the Rainbow Wahine the last three times they've played at Mott Athletics Center. Four players, Nicole Cavote, Taylor Rose, Jamie Stivers, and Lea Ungar will have their careers celebrated prior to the start of the match.
