SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. -- Miles Hastings completed 22 of his first 23 passes and threw for 210 yards and a pair of touchdowns to lead No. 10 UC Davis to a 24-13 victory over Cal Poly in the Battle for the Golden Horseshoe on Saturday in Alex G. Spanos Stadium.
Ulonzo Gilliam Jr. rushed for 109 yards and one score as the visiting Aggies improved to 7-1 for the season and 4-1 in Big Sky Conference games. Cal Poly fell to 1-6 and 0-4, losing its sixth straight following a season-opening win at San Diego.
After a scoreless first quarter, Isaiah Gomez kicked a 34-yard field goal to give UC Davis a 3-0 lead early in the second period. Cal Poly answered with a 14-yard touchdown pass from Spencer Brasch to Evan Burkhart with 1:40 to play in the half.
Missing the last four games due to a broken hand, Brasch returned to the lineup Saturday and, with his scoring pass to Burkhart, gave Cal Poly a lead for the first time since the opener.
Freshman Zedakiah Centers makes one of his team-high
and career-high seven catches Saturday night.The Aggies quickly regained the upper hand, driving 75 yards in just 84 seconds capped by a nine-yard pass from Hastings to C.J. Hutton 21 seconds before halftime.
Gilliam's 30-yard touchdown run less than a minute into the third quarter gave UC Davis a 17-7 lead.
Cal Poly pulled to within 17-13 on field goals spanning 26 and 28 yards by Matt Hoffman.
Carson Crawford completed the scoring for UC Davis, catching a one-yard toss from Hastings with 4:04 remaining in the third period. There was no scoring the rest of the way.
Cal Poly drove to the UC Davis 17-, 19- and 24-yard lines in the final quarter, but was turned away each time.
Brasch completed 23 of 44 passes for 291 yards and one touchdown. Zedakiah Centers and Chris Coleman were his favorite targets with seven and six catches, respectively. Sam Stewart rushed for 50 yards on nine carries.
Mustang senior linebacker Matt Shotwell made 14 tackles, lifting his career total to 297 stops, No. 9 on Cal Poly's all-time career tackles list.
Elijah Ponder notched a trio of sacks among his four tackles for lost yardage. Ponder and Laipeli Palu each had eight tackles, senior defensive lineman Myles Cecil recorded a sack and also intercepted a UC Davis pass, his first career theft, and Aaron Cooper and Trevor Owens each broke up two passes.
Cal Poly's 384 total yards and 24 first downs are season highs. UC Davis compiled 395 total yards and 25 first downs
Cal Poly plays its next two games on the road, visiting Portland State next Saturday and Sacramento State in two weeks.
