Cal Poly Falls to Portland State, 42-21, in Big Sky Conference Game
10/30/2021 5:49:00 PM | Football
HILLSBORO, Oregon -- Senior quarterback Davis Alexander ran for two touchdowns and passed for 198 yards and another score to lead Portland State to a 42-21 Big Sky Conference football victory over Cal Poly on a cool and breezy Saturday afternoon at Hillsboro Stadium.
Alexander completed 22 of 36 passes, including a scoring strike of 12 yards to Darien Chase early in the fourth quarter, as Portland State evened its overall record at 4-4 and improved to 3-2 in Big Sky games.
Cal Poly (1-7, 0-5), which lost its seventh straight game since a season-opening win at San Diego, rallied from an early 14-0 deficit to tie the game at 14-14.
Chris Coleman caught a 75-yard pass on a curl route for a touchdown late in the first quarter and Sam Stewart ran two yards for another score moments after Xavier Moore caught a 27-yard pass from Spencer Brasch on fourth down, tying the game at 14-14 three minutes into the third quarter.
Portland State, however, scored the next three touchdowns of the game on two short runs by Alexander and the pass to Chase, building a 21-point advantage that was too much for Cal Poly to overcome over the final 13 minutes of the game.
A few plays after Adam Garwood returned a kickoff 35 yards, he caught a three-yard touchdown pass from Brasch to close the gap to 14 points, but Portland State re-established its 21-point cushion, 42-21, with a 25-yard touchdown run by Malik Walker with six minutes to play.
In addition to its three touchdowns, the most by Cal Poly since the season opener, the Mustangs, failed to score on drives to the Portland State 7-yard line in the second quarter and to the Vikings' 4-yard line in the fourth period.
Brasch completed 19 of 33 passes for 287 yards and a pair of touchdowns. Giancarlo Woods caught five passes while Coleman and Shakobe Harper each had three receptions. Stewart rushed for 27 yards and Harper added 21 yards.
Walker finished with 116 yards on 14 carries for Portland State. Alexander's top targets were Beau Kelly with eight receptions and Matalo Talalemotu added six catches.
Portland State accumulated a 405-337 advantage in total yards and held possession of the ball for 36 minutes, 11 seconds. The game was a bit sloppy as each team committed four turnovers and combined for 17 penalties worth 158 yards.
Jeremy Justice and Matt Shotwell each recorded nine tackles, Shotwell lifting his career total to 307 stops, No. 6 in the Mustangs' record book.
Tommy Griffin and Aaron Cooper both intercepted Portland State passes while Xavier Oliphant recovered a Viking fumble. Shotwell and Elijah Ponder each notched a sack for the Mustangs.
Cal Poly plays its final road game next week, visiting Sacramento State for a Big Sky Conference game on Saturday, Nov. 6, with kickoff set for 6:05 p.m.
