Keyser Wins Singles Title at UCSB Classic

SANTA BARBARA, Calif. — Redshirt sophomore Ben Keyser took home the C Flight singles title to highlight the Cal Poly men's tennis at last weekend's UCSB Classic in Santa Barbara.
Keyser began his run to the title by beating Stanford's Dean Stratakos in straight sets 6-4, 6-2. He then beat Alexander Maggs of New Mexico in dominant fashion 6-1, 6-1. In the semifinals he took down St. Mary's Boris Reckow 6-4, 6-1. In the finals, he faced New Mexico's Nico Prieto, taking him down 6-2, 6-1 to secure the title.
Elsewhere, Cal Poly's duo of redshirt sophomore Fernando Fonseca and redshirt junior Gary Vardanyan won the consolation title of the B Flight doubles. After falling in the first round to UCSB's duo of Masjuan and Vedri they moved to the consolation bracket. From there they didn't lose again, first beating New Mexico's Samaha and Prieto 8-2 before taking down LMU's Di Giulio and Bellemy in the consolation championship match 8-4.
Other notable results included freshman Bastiaan Weststrate and redshirt sophomore Joe Leather taking third place in the A Flight doubles. They beat New Mexico's Maggs and Azkara 8-7(6) in the first round. After losing in the second round to UCSB's Jordan and Brady, they beat Watt and Reckow of St Mary's to claim third place.
Cal Poly will continue its fall schedule with the ITA Southwest Regional Oct. 21-24 in Malibu.
