Cal Poly Drops Second Straight Decision at CSU Bakersfield
1/9/2021 9:05:00 PM | Men's Basketball
BAKERSFIELD – Freshman guard Camren Pierce (above) finished with a team high 12 points, but the Cal Poly men's basketball program trailed CSU Bakersfield wire-to-wire for a second straight evening Saturday and dropped a 65-50 decision to the Roadrunners inside the Icardo Center.
Sophomore guard Colby Rogers added 11 points for Cal Poly (2-6, 0-2), which, facing CSU Bakersfield for the second time in a 24-hour window and playing on successive nights after sustaining a 20-day hiatus, was held to a 32.1 (18-for-56) percent field goal mark and 14.3 (3-for-21) percent three-point mark. CSU Bakersfield (7-4, 3-1), making its debut as a Big West member this season, outrebounded Cal Poly, 43-34.
Cal Poly returns home to Mott Athletics Center to play its first home game in 30 days when opening its now eight-game Big West home schedule against UC Riverside Jan. 15-16 (tip time 4 p.m. both afternoons).
During Saturday's matchup, CSU Bakersfield opened up an 11-4 lead after five-and-a-half minutes. Cal Poly closed the deficit to 21-19 after graduate forward Riley Till connected with a layup three-and-a-half minutes before halftime. The Mustangs, however, were held to just two more points the remainder of the period with Pierce sinking a jumper two seconds before the halftime horn as CSU Bakersfield took a 32-23 lead into the break.
Cal Poly scored five of the second half's opening six points, drawing to a 33-28 gap with 17 minutes left after the second of two Till free throws. Still facing a 36-30 disadvantage moments later, Cal Poly was held to just a single bucket during an ensuing four-minute span as the Roadrunners grabbed the night's first double-digit lead.
Cal Poly closed to within six points of CSU Bakersfield's lead just once the remainder of the evening.
