Mustangs Split CSUN Series Following 64-51 Saturday Defeat
1/30/2021 6:18:00 PM | Men's Basketball
SAN LUIS OBISPO – Sophomore forward Alimamy Koroma produced his team leading eighth double-digit scoring game of the season with 13 points Saturday afternoon, but the Cal Poly men's basketball program sustained a 64-51 defeat versus CSUN inside Mott Athletics Center.
Senior wing Mark Crowe added nine points for Cal Poly (3-11, 1-7), which led CSUN (6-7, 2-4) by as much as 12 early in the first half before being outscored by 25 points during the matchup's final 30 minutes. Held to a 36.8 (21-for-57) percent field goal mark, Cal Poly sank just seven of 28 three-point opportunities and attempted only two free throws.
Freshman forward Dyson Koehler, Cal Poly's leading rebounder at 5.8 per outing, grabbed a team high eight boards.
Saturday's loss was just Cal Poly's third home defeat versus CSUN during the previous 13 matchups inside Mott Athletics Center.
Cal Poly enjoys a scheduled bye week during the Big West Conference's Feb. 5-6 competition dates before resuming play and the first of its final four conference series when hosting Cal State Fullerton on Friday, Feb. 12 and Saturday, Feb. 13. Both matchups tip at 4 p.m.
In holding CSUN to a 0-for-8 shooting start, the Mustangs sprinted to a 10-1 lead after five minutes. Ultimately keeping CSUN to just one made basket in the first 13 attempts, Cal Poly maintained a 16-4 advantage after nine-and-a-half minutes.
CSUN, however, snapped from its slow start with a 21-3 run, holding the Mustangs to just one bucket during a seven-minute span to take a 25-19 lead. Crowe curtailed Cal Poly's slide with a three-pointer before Koroma added a layup and freshman forward Brantly Stevenson sank a three-pointer to help the Mustangs to a 27-27 deadlock at halftime.
With four early lead changes to begin the second half, neither side led by more than four points until a layup from CSUN guard Darius Brown II placed the Matadors up, 44-39, with 12 minutes remaining. Koroma completed a three-point play 90 seconds later to lower Cal Poly's deficit to 46-42, but CSUN forward Alex Merkviladze converted successive three-point attempts to hand the Matadors their first double-digit lead of the afternoon with nine minutes to go.
Cal Poly received a three-pointer and layup from senior guard Keith Smith on back-to-back possessions to trim the disadvantage to 54-49 with four and-a-half minutes remaining. Matadors guard Atin Wright, however, knocked down a three-pointer on CSUN's next possession to help keep the visitors in front the remainder of the afternoon.
