LOS ANGELES – The Cal Poly softball program was limited to five hits by San Diego State Saturday morning as the Mustangs fell in their Saturday opening game at the UCLA-Long Beach State Invitational at Easton Stadium, 9-0 (five innings). Cal Poly also dropped its second game to No. 18 Minnesota, 10-0 (five innings).
During Saturday's opening matchup versus San Diego State (16-9), the Aztecs notched all the offense required for victory with a three-run effort in the top of the first inning as shortstop Shelby Thompson and third baseman Maddi Ayers produced RBI singles. Thompson later scored on a Mustang throwing error following a fly out by second baseman Jillian Celis.
The Aztecs tacked on another run in the second inning before placing the scoreline in run-rule territory at 9-0 with a five-run fourth inning highlighted by a two-run Ayers single.
Offensively, Cal Poly (10-11) was held to one hit through the opening three innings and didn't advance a baserunner past first until the bottom of the fourth, when senior designated player Shelby Jeffries (above) followed a one-out walk drawn by junior second baseman Sarah Wulff with a double to right field. Sophomore catcher Lily Amos then reached on a fielder's choice, but Wulff was thrown out at home on the sequence. Senior first baseman Hailey Martin then lined out to end the scoring threat and inning.
Cal Poly produced three more hits in the bottom of the fifth, but stranded two baserunners to close the game.
During Saturday's second matchup versus No. 18 Minnesota (14-8), Cal Poly was retired in order in the top of the first and the Golden Gophers scratched out the opening runs in the bottom half through a one-out, two-run single from first baseman Emily Hansen.
Minnesota increased the lead to 3-0 in the second with left fielder Natalie DenHartog singling to plate second baseman Makenna Partain. The Golden Gophers then added five more runs in the third, highlighted by a two-run single from designated player Ellee Jensen and a two-run homer off the bat of DenHartog.
Minnesota completed the run-rule decision with two more runs in the fourth.
Offensively, Cal Poly saw its first 14 hitters retired in order until junior third baseman Hannah Ramelot singled with two down in the top of the fifth. Freshman catcher Kai Barrett then struck out to end the game.
Cal Poly concludes UCLA-Long Beach State Invitational play on Sunday, March 8 with a 10 a.m. doubleheader against Boston University and No. 1 UCLA.
