SAN LUIS OBISPO – Sophomore forward Alimamy Koroma scored a career high 17 points and freshman forward Brantly Stevenson (above) also finished with a collegiate best 17 on Sunday afternoon as the Cal Poly men's basketball program erased an early double-digit deficit against San Jose State to hand the Spartans a 73-71 defeat inside Mott Athletics Center.
Senior guard Keith Smith added a season best 13 points for Cal Poly (2-2), which twice trailed San Jose State by 14 points in the first half before finishing the opening period with a 24-16 run. During a second half with 13 lead changes, Cal Poly held San Jose State (1-2) to just one field goal during the final three-and-a-half minutes.
Stevenson and freshman forward Dyson Koehler both pulled down a career high eight rebounds. Koroma, meanwhile, recorded his third successive double-digit scoring game while grabbing seven boards.
Cal Poly, which shot 42.9 (24-for-56) percent from the floor, recorded its first victory against a Mountain West Conference opponent since topping Fresno State on Dec. 5, 2015, 77-65.
Cal Poly closes its season-opening, five-game home stand on Wednesday, Dec. 16 versus San Diego. Tip time is 3 p.m.
San Jose State started Sunday's matchup by sinking its first four field goal attempts and both free throw opportunities to claim a 10-2 lead after just two-and-a-half minutes. Cal Poly itself was limited to a 3-for-11 shooting start, forced into seven turnovers inside the opening eight minutes and trailed early, 20-6.
The Mustangs, however, scored on four of their ensuing five possessions to cut San Jose State's lead to 20-14 with nine-and-a-half minutes remaining in the opening half. Cal Poly trimmed San Jose State's lead to six twice more before a three-pointer from senior wing Mark Crowe and layup by graduate forward Hank Hollingsworth dropped the deficit to 33-30 with 91 seconds to play in the half. Cal Poly, which received eight first-half points from Koroma, ultimately trailed at the break, 36-32.
Cal Poly completed the comeback with its first two baskets of the second half as a Stevenson jumper and three-pointer from freshman guard Kobe Sanders provided the Mustangs a 37-36 lead with 19 minutes remaining.
With the lead changing hands 12 times during the next 17 minutes, Cal Poly wrested the game's final advantage at 68-67 after Stevenson sank a jumper.
