EDITOR'S NOTE: Each Wednesday from September to December, Cal Poly will look back at notable performances from past fall season teams through the Golden 1 Credit Union Golden Moments in Mustang History series.
SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. -- Seth Burford shattered Cal Poly's record for passing yards in a game. Kassim Osgood broke his own receptions mark and also established new school and NCAA marks for receiving yards in one game.
Coach Larry Welsh's Mustangs, however, dropped a heartbreaking 43-41 decision to No. 24 Northern Iowa as a two-point conversion pass with 49 seconds remaining, which would have tied the game, fell incomplete by inches.
That game took place exactly 20 years ago today, Nov. 4, 2000, inside then-Mustang Stadium, and is this week's Golden Mustang Moment presented by Golden 1 Credit Union.
Burford, a transfer from Idaho State who would go on to be selected by the then-San Diego Chargers in the seventh round of the 2002 National Football League Draft, passed for 566 yards, exceeding the old school mark of 410 yards by Alli Abrew.
Burford threw four touchdown passes -- two each to Osgood and Ryan McCarty. It was McCarty who caught a two-yarder from Burford in the final minute, capping a 65-yard drive, but Burford's two-point PAT pass was inches out of the reach of Adam Herzing in the endzone.
The loss was the second consecutive close one to a nationally ranked team. Cal Poly fell to No. 11 Hofstra on a field goal with three seconds left a week earlier.
Osgood finished with 17 catches for 376 yards. The 17 receptions were two more than his week-old record of 15 versus Hofstra while the yardage total erased Kamil Loud's record of 254 yards and also exceeded by six yards the NCAA Division I Football Championship Subdivision mark held by Michael Lerch of Princeton, set in 1991.
Burford, who was 34 of 49 passing in the game, went on to set school single-season marks of 2,672 yards and 23 touchdowns through the air. Burford still holds the yardage mark while Jonathan Dally passed for 29 touchdowns in 2007 to take that record from Burford.
McCarty finished with seven catches and Herzing had six.
By contrast, Cal Poly's running game netted just 17 yards on 32 carries.
