EDITOR'S NOTE: Each Wednesday from September to December, Cal Poly will look back at notable performances from past fall season teams through the Golden 1 Credit Union Golden Moments in Mustang History series.
SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. -- Jordan Beck smashed a Cal Poly football record by making 23 tackles in a non-conference game inside Montana's Washington-Grizzly Stadium.
Despite the performance by the junior linebacker, Cal Poly fell 17-14 to the Grizzlies, who were ranked No. 8 at the time. Montana rallied from 7-0 and 14-10 deficits for the win.
Beck recorded 10 solo tackles and 13 assisted stops for the mark, breaking the mark of 19 shared by Gary Swanson versus Idaho State in 1983 and Rich Bosselmann against Cal State Hayward in 1986.
Beck's performance is this week's Golden Moment in Mustang History, presented by Golden 1 Credit Union.
Cal Poly, ranked No. 20, stunned the then-record crowd of 23,687 by scoring first on an 11-yard run by Geno Randle midway through the second quarter. Randle's four-yard run with 5:40 to go in the third period lifted the Mustangs to a 14-10 advantage.
After Lex Hilliard ran three yards for a 17-14 Montana lead early in the fourth quarter, Cal Poly had the ball three more times in the game, but was forced to punt each time.
Beck still holds the mark for tackles in a single game and, one year later, almost broke it again with 22 tackles against Eastern Washington.
He broke the record for most tackles in a season with 128 in 2003 and bumped that mark up to 135 in 2004. Kyle Shotwell made 158 tackles in 2005 for the record and lost it to Nick Dzubnar, who notched 167 stops in 2014.
Beck, who claimed the Buck Buchanan Award, which goes to the top defensive player in the NCAA Division I Football Championship Subdivision, in 2004, still holds the career mark with 449 tackles from 2001-04.
Randle finished with 117 yards on 21 carries, his fifth straight game of 80 or more yards on the ground, and Mustang quarterback Chris Peterson completed 13 of 26 passes for 160 yards. Peterson's favorite targets were Darrell Jones with six catches for 48 yards and Anthony Randolph added five receptions for 74 yards.
Gilbert Rocha tied a career high with nine punts in the game, averaging 38.7 yards per kick.
Cal Poly went on to post a 7-4 record in Rich Ellerson's third season at the helm of the Mustangs.
