SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. -- Fresno native Louis Jackson, averaging better than 100 yards a game rushing, didn't suit up due to an ankle injury.
No problem.
Paul Dickens filled in admirably for Jackson, rushing for 163 yards on 35 carries, and the Cal Poly defense picked off five Fresno State passes as the Mustangs blanked the Bulldogs 26-0 before a record crowd of 8,680 fans squeezed into Mustang Stadium 41 years ago today.
The Oct. 6, 1979 contest has been tabbed as the This Day in Mustang History feature presented by Pacific Premier Bank.
The first and only Mustang shutout in the 98-year history of the series featured Dickens' rushing, two interceptions by Chris Jones, a tackle in the end zone and a fumble recovery by Tom Gilmartin and Ralph Gallagher's 22-yard interception return for a touchdown.
Robbie Martin, who scored all three touchdowns in Cal Poly's NCAA Division II national championship win over Eastern Illinois a year later, threw one touchdown pass and caught a 34-yard pass from Reid Lundstrom to set up a Graham Wiggill field goal against the Bulldogs.
Dan Craig ran one yard for the Mustangs' final score.
Martin rushed nine times for 61 yards and caught four passes for 69 additional yards. He returned four Fresno punts for 32 yards. Lundstrom completed six of 18 passes for 101 yards.
Steve Booker and Mel Kaufman also intercepted passes for Cal Poly.
Cal Poly is 10-32-2 all-time against Fresno State, but Joe Harper, head coach of the Mustangs from 1968-81, compiled a 7-5-1 mark versus the Bulldogs.
