EDITOR'S NOTE: Each Friday from September to December, Cal Poly will revisit a memorable game, meet or match from Mustang history through the Flashback Friday series presented by Pacific Eye.
SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. -- Kyle Shotwell recorded four sacks, James Noble rushed for 100 yards and Nick Coromelas kicked three field goals.
Those numbers added up to a 16-14 Cal Poly victory over San Diego State midway through the 2006 football season.
The win 14 years ago, on Oct. 28, 2006, at Qualcomm Stadium in San Diego is this week's Flashback Friday presented by Pacific Eye.
A 37-yard field goal by Coromelas with 1:50 to play lifted Cal Poly, ranked No. 9 in the NCAA Division I Football Championship Subdivision, to the victory over Football Bowl Subdivision member San Diego State before 20,974 fans.
Coach Rich Ellerson's Mustangs were the seventh FCS school to beat an FBS opponent that season and clinched their fourth consecutive winning campaign with the win.
Freshman quarterback Kevin Craft threw a pair of touchdown passes in the first quarter as San Diego State jumped to a 14-3 lead. Craft did it against a Mustang defense that was ranked No. 1 in the FCS against the pass two weeks earlier and that had not surrendered a point in the first quarter all season.
Cal Poly, which opened the game with a 23-yard Coromelas field goal, scored with 32 seconds left in the first half on a 28-yard pass from Matt Brennan to Ramses Barden, cutting the Aztecs' lead to 14-10.
Coromelas added a 25-yard field goal early in the fourth quarter to close the gap to 14-13.
Senior free safety Kenny Chicoine recovered a San Diego State fumble at the Aztec 23-yard line with 3:02 remaining and Brennan ran three times for three yards to set up the game-winning field goal by Coromelas.
San Diego State moved the ball 50 yards in eight plays to the Cal Poly 30-yard line in the closing minutes, but Garrett Palmer's 48-yard field goal with 32 seconds remaining was wide to the left.
Noble, playing in front of a large contingent of friends and family from Barstow, recorded his sixth 100-yard game of the season and 14th in 18 career starts, netting exactly 100 yards on 25 carries. Barden caught three passes from Brennan, who completed four of 13 passes for 80 yards.
Defensively, Shotwell's four sacks were a Division I school record, and he finished with 12 total tackles, the 22nd time in his career he has reached double digits in tackles.
The win was Cal Poly's third against an FCS member since moving up to Division I in 1994. The Mustangs also beat the Aztecs 29-27 in the 2008 season opener, also at Qualcomm Stadium.
