SAN LUIS OBISPO – A pair of Santa Clara goals inside the opening 24 minutes – including the eventual game-winning strike just 41 seconds into action – stood as the final margin Tuesday evening as the Cal Poly men's soccer program began a three-match home stand with a 2-0 loss inside Alex G. Spanos Stadium.
Senior goalkeeper Simon Boehme (above) chalked up four saves for Cal Poly (2-4-1), which recorded the same shot total as Santa Clara (15) and tested Broncos goalkeeper Henning Jolivet four times.
Santa Clara (2-5-0), however, produced the deciding goal in the first minute as a break down the right side of Spanos Stadium finished with sophomore Alan Camacho Soto crossing for fellow forward Andres Jimenez. Jimenez's shot struck the underside of the crossbar before crossing the goal line.
Cal Poly's first shot attempt on Tuesday from senior midfielder Jose Rivera elicited a 12th-minute save from Jolivet before senior forward Jared Pressley was turned away in the 17th.
Boehme, meanwhile, produced his first save in the 20th before Santa Clara doubled its lead on 24 minutes. Camacho Soto earned his second assist of the night after finding sophomore forward Javier Ruiz Duran, whose shot from the top of the penalty area deflected off Boehme.
Into the second half, Mustang junior forward George Grote saw a 62nd-minute attempt turned away by Jolivet before Rivera's 66th-minute header was also stopped.
Cal Poly's last opportunity to break through came seven seconds from full time, but senior forward Goode struck the post.
Cal Poly continues its three-match home stand versus NAIA Westmont on Saturday, Sept. 22. Kickoff is set for 7 p.m.
