
Mustangs Men's Tennis Falls to UCSB for Big West Regular Season Title

SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. — The Cal Poly men's tennis team (17-6, 4-1) lost to UC Santa Barbara (16-6, 5-0) on Saturday, April 21 for the Big West regular-season title. UCSB swept Cal Poly 7-0, breaking their five-match winning streak and giving the Mustangs their first loss at home this season.
Saturday's dual match honored the Mustangs' seniors Karl Enander and Axel Damiens who played their final match at Cal Poly. "They've been everything just in terms of keeping our culture," said head coach Nick Carless. "They embody exactly what a student-athlete is all about."
Other ceremonies included the dedication of Hugh Bream Court on court two and alumni weekend.
The Mustangs' comeback fell short in doubles, losing two out of three games. Enander and junior Dominic Bechard won at No. 3, defeating Joseph Guillian and Victor Krustev 6-4.
The freshmen Roman Shenkiryk and Andrew Whitehouse lost at No. 2 to Simon Freund and Joseph Rotheram 6-1.
At No. 1, junior Josh Ortlip and Damiens started down 3-0 but rallied to 4-5 before Nicolas Moreno and Anders Holm of Santa Barbara took the doubles point.
Cal Poly battled in singles, but couldn't manage a point from any court.
Ortlip lost to Moreno at No. 1, 6-4, 7-5. His singles record this season is now 17-6.
At No. 2, Bechard lost to Guillian 6-2, 6-2. His singles record is now 13-3.
Sophomore Antoine Noel took Freund to three games but fell 2-6, 6-1, 6-2 at No. 3.
Freshman Alexander Stater didn't win a set, losing to Hironori Koyanagi 6-0, 6-0 at No. 5
Enander played at No. 6 but was bested by Victor Krustev 7-5, 7-5.
Damiens played at No. 4 and fell to Holm in three sets 4-6, 6-1, 6-1.
The Mustangs get another shot at UCSB this upcoming weekend for the Big West Conference Tournament in Indian Wells, CA. The first round kicks off on Thursday, April 26, semifinals on Friday and the championship on Sunday.
