
Men's Tennis Advances Past UC Davis 4-0 to Big West Championship

INDIAN WELLS, Calif. – The Cal Poly men's tennis team (18-6, 5-1) advances to the Big West Championship after defeating the UC Davis Aggies 4-0 Friday in the semifinals. The No. 2-seeded Mustangs will battle the No. 1 seed, UC Santa Barbara Sunday for the final match of the season at 9 a.m.
Cal Poly took the doubles point, winning on courts two and three. On court three, freshmen Andrew Whitehouse and Roman Shenkiryk defeated Mitchell Iwahiro and Arjith Jayaraman 6-3. On court two, senior Karl Enander and Dominic Bechard took down David Goulak and Tommy Lam 6-4. The pairs swapped spots for the Big West Tournament.
Junior Josh Ortlip and senior Axel Damiens played on court one but did not finish. Their score was tied at 5-5 against Ivan Thamma and Everett Maltby. The pair's doubles record is 11-6 going into the final match of the season.
All it took was three Mustangs to win in singles before the match was called. Damiens finished first on court four, defeating Jayaraman easily 6-1, 6-1. In Cal Poly's last matchup against UC Davis, Damiens clinched the match defeating Lam in singles. Going into his final match of the season, Daminens' overall record is 16-10 in singles.
Sophomore Antoine Noel finished next on court three, defeating Goulak easily 6-2, 6-2 and bringing Cal Poly one point away from the championship. Noel's season total for singles is 18-6.
Enander finished off the match for the Mustangs, defeating Chethan Swanson on court six 6-3, 6-2.
The Mustangs faced UC Davis earlier this season, defeating them 4-2 at home on Saturday, April 14.
Cal Poly will rest Saturday and prepare for another Blue-Green Rivalry matchup against UCSB on Sunday.
