Cal Poly Defeats San Diego State 5-2 in Home Opener

SAN LUIS OBISPO — Cal Poly men's tennis took down San Diego State in the first home dual match of the season on Saturday. The Mustangs defeated the Aztecs 5-2.
Cal Poly secured the doubles point, winning two games and losing one. Freshmen Andrew Whitehouse and Roman Shenkiyrk, playing in the one spot, lost to junior Sander Gjoles-Anderson and sophomore Nick Mitchell 6-3.
Cal Poly fired back with junior Dominic Bechard and Karl Enander defeating sophomore Rafael Gonzalez Almazan and junior Raul de la Torre 7-5.
Senior Axel Damiens and junior Josh Ortlip secured the point by defeating senior Santiago Cevallos and sophomore Arnaud Restifo 7-6 (5).
In singles, freshman Alex Stater finished first, making quick work of freshman Jan Kirchoff and winning 6-2, 6-2.
Damiens lost to Gjoles-Anderson 6-4, 7-5. Shenkiyrk also lost to Almazan 6-4, 7-6 (5).
Sophomore Antoine Noel defeated Joel Popov 6-4, 6-4.
Ortlip secured the win for the Mustangs, defeating Santiago Cevallos in three sets, 6-3, 4-6, 6-2.
The teams decided to let the final match finish, and Bechard defeated Restifo 6-0, 6-7 (4), 6-2.
This makes the Mustangs 4-1 this season.
Cal Poly returns to action Sunday, Feb. 4 against Fresno State at 2 p.m. at Mustang Courts.
