DAVIS – Senior forward Sean Goode's team-leading fourth goal of the season to equalize Wednesday's match at UC Davis in the 84th minute helped the Cal Poly men's soccer program earn a 1-1 draw in the Big West Conference opening match for both programs at Aggie Soccer Field.
Senior goalkeeper Simon Boehme chalked up three saves for Cal Poly (4-4-2), which saw Wednesday's match scoreless into the 80th minute. That's when UC Davis (7-1-3) broke the stalemate through midfielder Dylan Wood, who connected with wing Kameron Carey and defender Justin Wright to fire past Boehme.
The Aggie lead, however, lasted all of three minutes, 34 seconds as a Cal Poly cross was punched away by UC Davis goalkeeper Wallis Lapsley. The errant ball fell for Goode (above), who lashed the equalizing goal past Lapsley from the top of the penalty area.
Into overtime, Goode forced a 92nd-minute save from Lapsley in the only shot on frame of the two extra periods.
Unbeaten in four of its last five matches, Cal Poly returns to Alex G. Spanos Stadium to host UC Riverside on Saturday, Oct. 6. Kickoff for Cal Poly's Big West home opener is 7 p.m.
Held without a shot attempt for the opening 40 minutes, Cal Poly kept Wednesday's match scoreless after Boehme stopped Aggie defender Roy Boateng in the 17th before punching away a point-blank attempt from forward Adam Mickelson at minute later. Boehme then chalked up save No. 3 on 24 minutes.
Sophomore defender Addison Parrish produced Cal Poly's first shot attempt, but it was freshman forward Reagan Rice who enjoyed the best scoring opportunity of the opening half as his 42nd-minute attempt hit the Aggie crossbar before clanging off the left post.
The Mustangs began the second half with a pair of shot attempts inside the opening six minutes, including a 50th-minute header from freshman defender Brecc Evans that was turned away Lapsley.
Cal Poly nearly broke through in the 69th minute, as junior forward Diego Alonso played a pass across the Aggie penalty area for sophomore midfielder Emmanuel Perez. Sliding at the left post, Perez whistled his attempt wide.
