Cal Poly Runs Win Streak to Four Straight with 3-1 Victory versus Portland
9/25/2017 12:00:00 AM | Men's Soccer
SAN LUIS OBISPO – Senior forward Kaba Alkebulan and junior forward Sean Goode notched first-half goals and senior defender Adam Olsen added a second-half penalty Monday evening as the Cal Poly men's soccer program furthered its winning streak to four-straight matches for the first time in three seasons with a 3-1 triumph versus Portland inside Alex G. Spanos Stadium.
Junior goalkeeper Simon Boehme added a solitary save for Cal Poly (4-4-0), which has won four straight matches for the first time under third-year head coach Steve Sampson and for the first time since Aug. 31-Sept. 11, 2014.
Olsen was turned away by Portland goalkeeper Paul Christensen in the second and 14th minutes before Cal Poly found the opening goal in the 15th. Following a corner kick from graduate midfielder Alex Sanchez, sophomore midfielder Diego Alonso lofted a header inside the penalty area for Alkebulan, who headed his first goal of 2017 past Christensen.
Junior midfielder Jose Rivera tested Christensen in the 22nd minute, but Cal Poly's lead was brief as the Pilots – behind a 25-yard strike from midfielder Billy Garton – equalized on 24 minutes. The goal broke a 400-minute streak by Boehme without allowing a goal from open play, a stretch dating to a 3-1 loss at Georgetown (Sept. 1).
The level scoreline last just nine minutes, however. In the 33rd, Cal Poly earned a free kick 40 yards from goal. Junior defender Nick Carroll lined a pass across field toward the right of Portland's goal and Goode stretched his right foot out to direct the ball into the back of the net.
The Mustangs then furthered their lead to 3-1 through a 49th-minute penalty converted by Olsen, who banged his attempt in off the right post.
Boehme, meanwhile, faced just two shots on goal during the evening and didn't record his save until the 65th minute.
Cal Poly outshot Portland 11-7 and earned eight corner kicks to Portland's one.
The Mustangs open Big West Conference action when hosting UC Riverside on Thursday, Sept. 28. Kick off is 7 p.m.
