Early Olsen Header Hands Cal Poly 1-0 Triumph at San Diego State

SAN DIEGO – Senior forward Adam Olsen's 14th-minute headed goal stood as the difference Saturday evening as the Cal Poly men's soccer program produced its first non-conference road victory in nearly two years with a 1-0 triumph versus San Diego State at SDSU Sports Deck.

Junior goalkeeper Simon Boehme recorded three saves for Cal Poly (2-4-0), which earned its first non-conference road victory since producing a 2-0 win at Loyola Marymount on Sept. 27, 2015. Boehme, who earned his second successive shutout, has not allowed a goal from open play in 286 straight minutes.

Neither program registered a shot until Olsen (above) produced the game-winning strike. Cal Poly won a throw from deep inside San Diego State's end and, from the right touchline, junior forward Sean Goode arced his first career assist into the Aztec penalty area. Olsen headed Goode's throw down near the right post to score his first goal since Sept. 18, 2015.

Meanwhile, Boehme – ranked first among NCAA Division I goalkeepers in saves per game entering the week (now 6.33) – chalked up his first stop in the 22nd minute. With Boehme drawn out of goal in the 31st minute, Aztec forward Jeroen Meefout fired wide of the left post and although the Aztecs compiled a 7-4 first-half shot advantage, the Mustangs took the 1-0 lead into the break.

Into the second half, Boehme recorded a 56th-minute stop before producing his most important and final save in the 84th minute, splaying out to his right to turn away an attempt from San Diego State forward Winston Sorhaitz.

Cal Poly enjoyed two second-half chances to double its lead, but Olsen was turned away by San Diego State goalkeeper Adam Allmaras in the 59th minute and junior forward Jose Rivera fired a shot across the Aztec goalmouth in the 79th.

The Mustangs open a four-match home stand on Saturday, Sept. 23 versus Cal State Bakersfield. The match will be played at Paso Robles Horse Park in nearby Paso Robles, Calif. Kickoff is 11 a.m.
