
Cal Poly Falls to No. 7 Indiana, 2-0, in Season Opener

SOUTH BEND, Indiana — No. 7 Indiana scored a goal in each half for a 2-0 victory over Cal Poly in a season-opening men's soccer match Friday afternoon at Alumni Stadium on the campus of Notre Dame.
On the opening day of the 2017 Mike Berticelli Memorial Tournament, Cal Poly mustered just one shot on goal and Trey Muse made the save en route to the shutout.
Mustang goalkeeper Simon Boehme (pictured above) recorded three saves.
Andrew Gutman scored the first goal for Indiana in the eighth minute, taking a drop pass from Thomas Warr to the left and directing the ball eight yards inside the left post.
Mason Toye garnered the second Indiana goal in the 72nd minute. Off a free kick by Grant Lillard, Austin Panchot headed the ball to Toye, who knocked the ball inside the right post from four yards out.
Cal Poly's lone shot on goal was a header by Freeman Dwamena in the 35th minute.
Indiana outshot Cal Poly 8-5 and was awarded nine corner kicks to just two for the Mustangs. Fouls were even at 11 apiece.
Cal Poly plays its second match of the season against another top-10 team Sunday, facing No. 10 Notre Dame at 11 a.m. Pacific.
