
Cal Poly Men's Tennis Goes 2-1 at Pacific Mountain Invitational

STOCKTON – The Cal Poly men's tennis team went 2-1 at the Pacific Mountain Invitational in Stockton, Calif., as they beat Grand Canyon University 4-2, fell to Wichita State 4-3 and beat Pacific 4-1.
The Mustangs kicked off the invitational Saturday morning against GCU, where they skipped doubles play and went right into singles play.
Antoine Noel was beat by Valentin Long on court five, 6-3, 6-4, while Garrett Auproux was defeated by Lorenzo Fucile on court three 6-3, 6-3.
Down 2-0, the Mustangs turned the momentum around after Ben Donovan picked up an easy 6-2, 6-1 win against Adrian Legarreta on court two.
Corey Pang tied things up with the Antelopes after he beat Francois Musitelli 6-4, 6-4 on court one.
Josh Ortlip beat Justin Cvitanovic 6-3, 6-2 on court four, giving the Mustangs the lead.
Axel Damiens finished the match off on a strong note, as he beat Matt Ounanian in a three set match on court six 4-6, 7-6(4), 6-2.
The Mustangs picked play back up on Sunday against Wichita State and Pacific, where they split 1-1.
Cal Poly first took on Wichita State, where Pang and Donovan started the match off on a strong note, as they beat the doubles tandem of Haru Inoue and Miroslav Herzan on court one 6-2.
Karl Enander and Tim Tan fell against Jocelyn Devilliers and Eddie Stoica on court two 6-1, while Auproux and Ortlip fell to Marius Frosa and Murkel Dellien 6-4, giving Wichita State the doubles point.
Following doubles play, the Mustangs started singles play where Noel fell to Frosa 6-2, 7-6(5) on court five.
Donovan put Cal Poly's first point on the board, as he beat Herzan 6-4, 6-2 on court two, while Auproux beat Deilliers on court three 6-3, 6-4, giving the Mustangs the lead.
Ortlip pushed Stoica to three sets and came out with a win on court four 4-6, 6-3, 6-1.
Damiens put up a fight against Dellien, as he pushed him to three sets, but couldn't hold on, as he fell 6-2, 6-4, 4-6 on court six, tying the score up 3-3.
Pang took on Inoue on court one, forcing a third set but falling short, 3-6, 6-1, 6-4, giving Wichita State its fourth point needed to win the match.
The Mustangs took on Pacific in their second match of the day, where they went straight into singles play.
Pang picked up a quick 6-3, 6-2 win against Miguel Diaz on court one 6-3, 6-2 to put the Mustangs' first point on the board.
Noel was defeated by Ross Watson 6-0, 7-5 on court five, giving Pacific its first and only point.
Auproux took on Akram El Sallaly on court three, pushing him to three sets and coming out with a win, 5-7, 6-2, 6-0, giving the Mustangs a 2-1 lead.
Damiens beat Bernardo Oliveira 6-0, 7-6(4) on court six, while Donovan beat Tadiwa Chinamo on court two 4-6, 6-3, 6-3, clinching the match for the Mustangs.
The Mustangs are now 2-0 against Pacific and 7-5 overall. Cal Poly will be back on the courts on Tuesday March 7 and March 8 to take on Utah State and Middle Tennessee at Mustang Courts.
