SAN LUIS OBISPO – The No. 45 Cal Poly men's tennis team picked up an impressive win over Utah State Tuesday afternoon, as they beat the Aggies 4-3 at home.
"We played some of our best doubles of the season today, especially at the No. 2 spot," said head coach Nick Carless. "Karl and Tim managed some momentum swings early on, stayed composed and had clinched that point for us."
The No. 44 doubles tandem of Corey Pang and Ben Donovan beat Sam Serrano and Kai Wehnelt on court one 6-2, while Enander and Tan defeated Johns Maier and Jack Swindells 6-4, clinching the doubles point for the Mustangs.
With a 1-0 lead, the Mustangs started singles play where Josh Ortlip pushed Sergio Bucar on court on 6-3, 6-2, while Corey Pang beat Kai Wehnelt on court one 6-4, 6-4.
Up 3-0, Axel Damiens was beat by Serrano 6-3, 6-4 on court five, while Garrett Auproux was beat by Jaime Barajas on court three 7-5, 7-5.
Ben Donovan clinched the match for the Mustangs when he beat Swindells on court two 6-3, 6-4.
Antoine Noel pushed Maier to three sets, but fell short on court six 7-5, 0-6, 6-3.
"The doubles point along with some solid complete matches from Corey and Josh to put us up 3-0, it came down to Ben and Antoine," said Carless. To be honest, with how Ben has been playing lately and with us in position to get our our fourth point, I was confident he would get it done."
"When Ben returns and ground strokes are dialed in the way they are right now, he's a tough out, like he has been for his whole career at Poly."
The Mustangs will be back on the courts Wednesday March 8 to take on Middle Tennessee at noon.
