SACRAMENTO – Senior defender Adam Olsen's 43rd-minute penalty conversion leveled Saturday's scoreline heading into halftime for the Cal Poly men's soccer program, but Sacramento State scored four times without reply in the second half as the Mustangs fell at Hornet Field, 5-1.
Olsen (above) placed both of his shots on target and junior forward Jose Rivera produced a team high three shot attempts for Cal Poly (6-9-1, 2-5-1). The Mustangs, however, stayed on seven points in the Big West Conference North Division standings with Saturday's loss and now trail joint second-place Sacramento State (8-7-1, 4-3-1) and UC Davis (7-7-2, 4-2-1) by six points with two regular season matches remaining (UC Davis has three matches left, including a Saturday night game at North Division leader UC Santa Barbara).
The top three programs in the North Division qualify for the Nov. 1, 4 and 11 Big West Tournament. Cal Poly does not own the tiebreaker versus Sacramento State should both programs finish level on 13 points to close the regular season and will be eliminated from tournament contention if UC Davis earns a solitary point in any of its final three matches.
Cal Poly closes the regular season by hosting UC Davis (Wednesday, Oct. 25) and UC Santa Barbara (Saturday, Oct. 28). Both matches kick off at 7 p.m. inside Alex G. Spanos Stadium.
During Saturday's matchup at Sacramento State, the Hornets grabbed a 1-0 lead in the 16th minute as forward Christian Webb played a cross for midfielder Matt Carnefix, who found the back of the Mustang net from 10 yards.
Cal Poly was limited to one shot during the opening 43 minutes before winning a penalty following a yellow card infraction committed by Sacramento State defender Tyler Moss. Olsen stepped to the penalty spot and buried his third conversion in as many attempts this season to knot the game at 1-1 heading into the break.
The Hornets, however, reaffirmed their lead just six minutes after the restart behind forward Justin Bedig's third goal of the season.
Sacramento State then ran its lead to 3-1 on 63 minutes through midfielder Dominic Scotti before midfielder Paul Geyer and forward Brad Bumgarner produced goals in the 74th and 75th minutes, respectively.
