SAN LUIS OBISPO – Cal Poly sophomore goalkeeper Simon Boehme (top) recorded a pair of saves, but Loyola Marymount forward Maurice Morton's 72nd-minute strike stood as the difference Sunday as the Mustangs closed their two-match exhibition stretch with a 1-0 loss at Alex G. Spanos Stadium.
Held to four shot attempts through the opening 71 minutes, Loyola Marymount broke the deadlock as Lions defender Garrett Amador played a pass from the left side of the Cal Poly penalty area for Morton, whose shot near the right post hit the roof of the Mustang net.
Cal Poly produced 10 shots to Loyola Marymount's six and forced six corner kick opportunities, but placed just one shot on target as defender Tony Scimeca's 30th-minute header was collected by Lions goalkeeper Collin Partee.
Cal Poly's defense kept Loyola Marymount without a shot attempt for the opening 31 minutes and Boehme was called into a 43rd-minute point-blank save to preserve the draw.
Boehme chalked up his second save in the 67th before Amador broke through four minutes later.
Cal Poly's best chances to equalize late occurred in the 75th, when junior defender Brett Foreman's attempt from 12 yards was blocked, and in the 88th, when senior defender Jack O'Connor struck the cross bar with a free kick.
Cal Poly opens the 2016 regular season at No. 8 North Carolina on Friday, Aug. 26 at 4:30 p.m. PT.
