SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. – The 67th-ranked Cal Poly men's tennis team saw its five match win streak snapped by 47th-ranked Denver on Friday afternoon at Mustang Courts. Despite singles victories from junior Corey Pang and sophomore Karl Enander, the Mustangs lost their first match in over a month (Feb. 21).
Cal Poly juniors Ben Donovan and Pang won their doubles matchup against DU's Alex Gasson and David Fox from the first position, 6-0, but the Pioneers then collected the next two matchups to seal the doubles point.
Pang's singles win at No. 3 over Fox evened the match at one apiece, as the junior delivered a straight-set decision over the Pioneer senior, 6-1 and 6-1. Pang (pictured) is now 11-4 from the third position in dual match play and has collected six consecutive solo victories.
With Denver leading 3-1 after a pair of singles victories, Enander drew the Mustangs to within one after his three-set thriller over Zach Fryer from the sixth position, 6-3, 2-6 and 6-2. It was the sophomore's first singles triumph of the dual match season.
Donovan won his first set against Henry Craig in the first position, but was unable to maintain the momentum before falling in three sets, 5-7, 6-2 and 6-2. Craig's win over Donovan cemented the match victory for the Pioneers, who improved to 11-6 overall this season.
Cal Poly (8-7) continues its season-long home stand when entertaining Boise State at 12 p.m. Saturday at Mustang Courts. Admission is free.
