
No. 58 Cal Poly Defeats Loyola Marymount, 6-1

LOS ANGELES, Calif. – For the third time during its last four matches, 58th-ranked Cal Poly men's tennis collected a victory after a 6-1 defeat of Loyola Marymount on Sunday afternoon at the LMU Tennis Center. Cal Poly secured the initial six points against the Lions after falling in the first doubles matchup of the day.
After LMU's tandem of Joat Farah and Errol Smith beat junior Garrett Auproux and junior Tim Tan at No. 2 doubles, 6-1, Cal Poly unleashed an unblemished streak of seven straight matchup wins, including the final two pair battles to capture the doubles point.
The Cal Poly junior duo of Ben Donovan and Corey Pang improved to 4-1 in dual matches this season with a 6-4 edging of LMU's Charles Boyce and Cristobal Rivera from the first spot. Cal Poly's sophomore pairing of Karl Enander and Dan Cardiff (pictured) outlasted LMU's Lukas Moenter and Luke Bohuslav at No. 3, 7-6 (8) for the 1-0 match advantage.
Cal Poly freshman Josh Ortlip downed Bohuslav at No. 4 singles, 6-2, 6-2 and sophomore Axel Damiens beat Moenter in straight sets, 6-1, 7-6 (5) to provide the Mustangs with a 3-0 lead. Pang then delivered the clinching point for Cal Poly with a two set, 7-5, 6-4 win over Rivera at No. 3.
Pang improved to 5-2 in singles dual matches this season, while Ortlip won his fourth dual matchup overall and Damiens his third.
Cal Poly's Donovan worked a comeback to perfection after falling in the opening set against Boyce at No. 1, 6-4. Donovan outslugged Boyce in both the second and third sets, 6-4, 6-3 to win his third consecutive singles matchup overall and improve to 2-2 from the first solo position.
Auproux won Cal Poly's sixth straight point against the Lions with a three-set, comeback win over Smith at No. 2, 4-6, 7-5, 6-4. For Auproux, it marked his second win from the second position this year.
LMU's Farah outdueled Cal Poly freshman Rafael Lenhard from the sixth spot, 3-6, 6-1, 6-1 for the Lions only point of the afternoon.
Cal Poly (3-4) travels south next weekend to face a pair of ranked opponents when visiting No. 2 TCU on Saturday, Feb. 20 and No. 51 SMU on Sunday, Feb. 21. For live updates and photos from the road, be sure to follow the men's tennis program on Twitter.
