FORT WORTH, Texas – The 61st-ranked Cal Poly men's tennis team was unable to gain any momentum against the 3rd-ranked TCU Horned Frogs, falling 7-0 at the Bayard H. Friedman Tennis Center on Saturday afternoon. With the victory, TCU improves to 6-3 overall, while Cal Poly slips to 3-5.
TCU grabbed the early momentum by taking the doubles point after Jerry Lopez and Trevor Johnson beat Cal Poly's sophomore duo of Karl Enander and Dan Cardiff at No. 3, 6-2 and Hudson Blake and Reese Stalder outlasted the Mustang tandem of sophomore Garrett Auproux and junior Tim Tan at No. 2, 7-5.
Individually, Auproux (pictured) pushed the ITA's 38th-ranked singles player, Guillermo Nunez of TCU to a third set before falling (6-3, 3-6, 6-4) from the No. 2 spot. TCU's Trey Daniel beat Cal Poly sophomore Axel Damiens in straight sets at No. 5, 6-1, 6-2 and Alex Rybakov (the ITA's 122nd-ranked singles player) downed Cal Poly junior Ben Donovan at No. 1, 6-1, 6-2.
TCU's Stalder then took down Tan at No. 6 in two sets, 6-1, 6-4, for the match-clinching win. Cal Poly freshman Josh Ortlip fell to TCU's Trevor Johnson from the fourth position, 6-4, 6-3, while the Horned Frogs' Jerry Lopez beat Cal Poly junior Corey Pang in consecutive sets at No. 3, 6-2, 6-2 to put the finishing touches on TCU's sweep victory.
Cal Poly (3-5) faces No. 53 SMU on Sunday afternoon before returning home to begin a season-long nine-match home stand that stretches from Feb. 27 through April 3.
