
No. 57 Cal Poly Outlasts Portland in Seattle, 4-3

SEATTLE, Wash. – Playing its fourth match in the last seven days, the 57th-ranked Cal Poly men's tennis team outlasted Portland on Saturday morning, 4-3, at the Nordstrom Tennis Center. Mustang junior Ben Donovan (pictured) cemented the triumph – Cal Poly's first this spring – after securing a comeback, three-set win over UP's Mathieu Garcia at No. 2, 6-7, 6-3, 6-4.
After the Pilots secured the doubles point and the initial singles matchup, Cal Poly won three consecutive points to take the lead, only to have Portland knot the match at three apiece.
Mustang sophomore Garrett Auproux ousted Michail Pervolaraki in straight sets at No. 1, 6-4, 6-3, junior Corey Pang defeated UP's Pierre Garcia at No. 3, 6-4, 6-2 and true freshman Josh Ortlip came from behind to down Felix Fan in three sets, 3-6, 6-3, 6-3 to provide the first lead of the day for Cal Poly.
After Portland equalized the match with a win at No. 6 singles (Jared Madison over Aiku Shintani, 6-1, 4-6, 6-4), Donovan's heroics lifted the Mustangs to victory.
Cal Poly (1-3) returns home for two matches next week, including the spring season home-opener against Saint Mary's at noon PT Friday, Feb. 5 at Mustang Courts.
