SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. – For the second time in less than a week, No. 58 Cal Poly men's tennis won a dual match to extend its winning streak to two after defeating Saint Mary's, 6-1 on Friday afternoon at Mustang Courts.
Cal Poly grabbed the doubles point early and never looked back, collecting a 5-0 lead over the Gaels before Saint Mary's was able to secure its first point of the day. Highlighting the Mustang victory was a pair of juniors – Garrett Auproux and Corey Pang – both of whom won their second singles matchup in a row.
To begin the day, junior Tim Tan partnered with Auproux to upend SMC's duo of Manuel De Luis Lamelas and Brian Lee, 6-1, while Cal Poly's sophomore pairing of Dan Cardiff and Karl Enander outlasted Daniel Krutik and Jacob Lagman, 7-6 (3), to give the Mustangs the early advantage.
Cal Poly junior Ben Donovan provided the Mustangs with a 2-0 lead after a straight set, 6-0, 6-3 win over SMC's Thomas Alex Hunt from the first position. Pang delivered a two-set victory over James Markiewicz, 7-5, 6-2 at No. 3 and Auproux outlasted Nash Vollenweider at No. 2, 6-3, 7-6 (6) – which proved to be the match-clinching win – for the 4-0 match lead.
Cal Poly sophomore Axel Damiens defeated SMC's Lagman from the fifth position in straight sets, 6-4, 6-4 to provide the Mustangs with a 5-0 match advantage.
Lamelas collected the Gaels only singles triumph of the afternoon, beating Cal Poly freshman Josh Ortlip in three sets, 6-2, 0-6, 6-4. Cal Poly freshman Rafael Lenhard delivered the crushing blow, a two-set win over Krutik, 7-5, 6-3, for the final touches on the 6-1 victory.
Pang (pictured) improved to 4-1 in dual singles matches this season, with all of his wins coming from the third position. Auproux and Tan have now won three doubles matchups this dual season, all from the second spot, while Damiens has won twice from his No. 5 position in singles.
Cal Poly (2-3) takes Saturday off and will face its fourth nationally-ranked opponent this dual season when battling No. 38 San Diego State at noon PT Sunday at Mustang Courts. For a preview of Sunday's match, click HERE. Admission at Mustang Courts is free.
