LOS ANGELES – Junior forward Justin Dhillon (top) opened the scoring in the 24th minute and senior midfielder Chase Minter added goal No. 2 six minutes from full time as the Cal Poly men's soccer program closed the non-conference portion of its regular season schedule Sunday afternoon with a 2-0 victory versus Loyola Marymount at Sullivan Field.
In his 56th successive start, senior goalkeeper Wade Hamilton – for the first time in his career – wasn't called upon to make a save as the Mustang defense kept Loyola Marymount without a shot on target. Overall, Cal Poly (5-2-1) outshot Loyola Marymount (5-5-0), 11-6.
Cal Poly opens its 10-match Big West Conference schedule at CSUN on Thursday, Oct. 1 and at UC Irvine on Saturday, Oct. 3.
Mustang junior midfielder Austin Wilcox struck the Loyola Marymount cross bar just 67 seconds into action, Minter went wide a minute later and Dhillon forced Lions goalkeeper Vince Paldino into a 21st minute save before notching the eventual game-winner midway through the half. With assists credited to Wilcox and Minter, Dhillon scored his first of the season by beating Paldino with a shot toward the far post.
With the game-winning strike, Dhillon became Cal Poly's sixth goalscorer of 2015. Minter, ranked second in Cal Poly program history for assists, earned the 17th of his career.
Cal Poly tested Paldino once more in the opening half with sophomore midfielder Joseph Bolous turned away on 41 minutes. Dhillon, meanwhile, was stopped once more three minutes into the second half.
Limited to two shot attempts in the first half, Loyola Marymount produced just four more in the second and failed to force Hamilton into action.
Cal Poly doubled its lead in the 84th minute as Minter produced his second goal of the year by besting Paldino with a free kick from 25 yards.
