SAN LUIS OBISPO – Senior goalkeeper Wade Hamilton (top) recorded a pair of saves to post his 15th career shutout in his 59th successive start, but the Cal Poly men's soccer program finished Thursday's match versus Cal State Fullerton in a scoreless draw inside Alex G. Spanos Stadium.
In the first of 29 Division I meetings between Cal Poly and Cal State Fullerton to finish drawn, the Titans outshot the Mustangs, 9-8. Cal Poly, however, posted its third shutout in its last four matches and pushed its unbeaten run to five successive outings. Cal Poly has conceded just one goal in three Big West matches.
With Thursday's draw, Cal Poly (6-2-3, 1-0-2; five points) moved to five points in the Big West North Division standings. The Mustangs, however, trail division leader UC Santa Barbara (8-3-1, 3-0-0; nine points) by four points after the Gauchos topped UC Riverside (5-6-1, 1-2-0; three points) earlier Thursday, 2-0.
Cal Poly concludes its two-match home stand and completes regular season action versus Big West Conference South Division opposition when hosting UC Riverside on Saturday, Oct. 10 at 7 p.m.
Big West South Division leader Cal State Fullerton (7-4-1, 2-0-1; seven points) had a goal disallowed through offsides less than a minute into action and both sides were held without a shot attempt until Mustang senior midfielder Matt LaGrassa headed an attempt over the crossbar on 12 minutes.
Cal Poly, which limited Cal State Fullerton to just one shot attempt during the first half, also produced the game's chance attempt on target with senior midfielder Chase Minter turned away by Titan goalkeeper David Rodriguez Elias in the 36th minute.
The 0-0 halftime stalemate marked just the second time Cal Poly hadn't scored in the first half of a game this season.
Into the second half, Hamilton – the Big West's leader with a 0.77 goals against average – recorded saves in the 70th and 82nd minutes to keep the scoreline level.
Cal Poly's best chance to take the three points late occurred two-and-a-half minutes from full time, as junior midfielder Austin Wilcox had a goal disallowed for offsides.
