SAN DIEGO — In a close match that saw singles transpire first because of a projected chance of rain, the Cal Poly men's tennis team battled to a tie on Friday before San Diego State claimed the doubles point for a 4-3 win at Aztec Tennis Center.
The Mustangs (2-1) took the earliest lead thanks to a 6-0, 6-2 win on the No. 1 court from sophomore Ben Donovan, who upped his dual-play record to 3-0 (8-4 including tournaments) by almost blanking Thorsten Bertsch (a three-time All-Mountain West Conference senior who at one juncture a year ago was ranked as high as No. 69 nationally).
After SDSU (3-1), the ITA's 70th-ranked team as of Jan. 20, won at Nos. 2 and 3 (each of which featured tiebreaks), Cal Poly freshman Lucas Lesoeur evened the score at No. 4, topping Hendrik Jebens 6-4, 2-6, 6-2.
Then senior captain Naveen Beasley also bumped his spring record to 3-0, defeating Milen Ianakiev 6-3, 3-6, 6-3.
"I thought the guys played excellent in singles today," Cal Poly head coach Nick Carless said. "They had great poise in terms of figuring out how to play each of their opponents."
Jonas Meinzer ultimately made it 3-all by edging freshman Karl Enander 4-6, 6-3, 7-6 (4).
Once moving to the doubles courts, the Aztecs claimed a 6-2 victory at No. 3 before clinching with a 6-4 result at No. 1.
"I thought in doubles we rushed a little and had a bit of a shaky start, and we weren't able to come back from that," Carless said.
Cal Poly will stay in the city to face No. 41-ranked USD at 1:30 Saturday afternoon. The Toreros will bring two ranked singles players: No. 53 Uros Petronijevic and No. 70 Filip Vittek.
