SAN FRANCISCO — The San Francisco men's tennis team won a close non-conference match over visiting Cal Poly on Monday afternoon, 4-3 at The Olympic Club, in a dual that featured three tiebreakers and just as many three-set battles.
The Mustangs (7-11) started with an 8-2 win on the No. 3 doubles court from senior Jurgen De Jager and freshman Ben Donovan over Thomas Takemoto and Germain Bahri, before junior Devin Barber and freshman Corey Pang claimed the doubles point at No. 2 thanks to an 8-4 win over Christian Brockstedt and Timothy Tan.
The De Jager-Donovan tandem improved to 3-1 overall, while the Barber-Pang duo is now 8-4 in duals.
Then in singles, senior Matt Thomson kept Cal Poly's momentum going, earning a 6-2, 6-3 win against Bahri at No. 5 to make the lead 2-0.
The Dons (10-12) rallied for the next four wins, though, to clinch the outcome.
On the fourth court, Pang (pictured at right) finished the day by adding a 2-6, 7-6 (8-6), 6-3 win versus Takemoto.
Cal Poly will stay in the Bay Area to visit 52nd-ranked Stanford (9-4) at 1:30 p.m. Tuesday.
