STANFORD — Playing its second match away from home in as many days, the Cal Poly men's tennis team lost 4-2 to 43rd-ranked Stanford on Tuesday afternoon, dropping a close non-conference dual at Taube Stadium.
Cal Poly's Devin Barber and Corey Pang were tied at six games apiece with Jamin Ball and John Morrissey on the No. 2 doubles court, but it was rendered unfinished after Stanford (10-4) clinched the point thanks to wins at the other two spots.
Ben Donovan brought the Mustangs to within 2-1 with his 6-3, 6-2 win at No. 2 singles over Daniel Ho.
Later on, Jurgen De Jager also got back in the win column while closing the gap to 3-2, thanks to a 7-6 (6), 7-6 (2) victory over Trey Strobel on the No. 3 court.
De Jager, a senior, bumped his overall record to 12-2, while Donovan (pictured at right), a freshman, improved to 14-9.
Morrissey, though — who's usually part of an 84th-ranked doubles team — came from behind for a 6-7 (7), 6-0, 6-4 win at No. 1.
Pang led Nolan Paige 7-6 (6), 4-6, 4-2 at No. 4, but it also went unfinished after the team win had already been secured.
Cal Poly (7-12, 2-1) will return home to host UC Davis (13-8, 2-1) in a renewal of the Big West Conference schedule at 10:30 a.m. Saturday on Mustang Courts. The winner will break a third-place tie in the standings.
