
Mustangs Dominate Central Connecticut State, 3-0

SACRAMENTO, Calif. – The Cal Poly volleyball team opened the Sacramento State Tournament in dominating fashion in shutting out Central Connecticut State, 3-0, on Friday. The Mustangs won by set scores of 25-22, 25-12 and 25-19. With the win the Mustangs improve to 2-2 on the season while CCSU falls to 1-3 .
Cal Poly will continue tournament play on Saturday when the Mustangs will face San Jose State and the host Hornets.
Cal Poly hit a blistering .416 for the match, recording 48 kills on 89 swings with just 11 errors. In the first set the Mustangs hit .485, committing only two hitting errors. The team hit .429 and .321 in the final two sets.
Cal Poly was led by senior outside hitter Chelsea Hardin with 13 kills on 17 swings as she hit .647 for the match. Fellow senior, Megan McConnell added 10 kills with sophomore Hannah Schleis chipping in with nine. Freshman Taylor Gruenewald and senior Jennifer Keddy, playing in only two sets, had eight and five kills respectively.
Junior Shannon Garrett dished out 35 assists while senior Kate Walters led the team with eight digs.
Senior Steffi Sooter and Schleis each tallied three aces.
Ceronika Ban led CCSU with seven kills while the team hit .234. Cal Poly limited CCSU to a .000 hitting percentage in the second set.
In the first set CCSU moved out to an early lead, 6-2, when the Mustangs went on a 5-1 run to tie up the set. The run continued with the Mustangs moving out to an 11-8 lead behind a pair of kills by Gruenewald and Garrett forcing a CCSU timeout. Cal Poly maintained the margin midway through the set and took a 17-13 lead on a kill by McConnell. CCSU battled back and tied the set up at 17-17 and gained a 20-18 lead, forcing a Cal Poly timeout. The Mustangs retook the lead, 21-20, on a kill by Schleis. After CCSU tied the set, 22-22, Cal Poly scored three straight points to win the first set, 25-22, with Keddy putting away the final kill.
The Mustangs opened the second set, 4-0, behind a pair of aces by Steffi Sooter. CCSU came back to tie the set at 5-5 when Sooter served up her third ace of the set to retake the lead. Three kills by Hardin gave the Mustangs a 14-10 advantage and with another three kills she propelled the Mustangs to a 20-11 lead. The Mustangs cruised to a 25-12 win in the second set.
A kill by Schleis gave the Mustangs an early lead, 6-4, and a kill by McConnell put the Mustangs up 10-6 in the third set. CCSU kept pace with the Mustangs, but a kill by Hardin and an ace by Schleis gave the Mustangs an18-15 advantage. Cal Poly kept the pressure on and pulled out to a six point advantage (22-16) forcing a CCSU timeout. The Mustangs put away the set and the match on a kill by McConnell.
