
Cal Poly Falls to Dayton, 3-1

DAYTON, OH – The Mustangs were not able to contain the high scoring Dayton Flyers in a non-conference soccer game on Sunday, falling 3-1. With the loss Cal Poly evens its record at 1-1 while Dayton improves to 2-0 on the young season.
In the game Cal Poly took 22 shots, eight on goal while Dayton took 18 shots, nine on goal.
Dayton held the edge, 7-6, in corners while the Mustangs were whistled for two more fouls (13-11).
Midfielder Tiffany Gummow took seven shots with two on goal while forward Cici Kobinski took three shots two on goal.
Brooke Gauvin took the loss for the Mustangs with five saves with her record falling to 1-1. Katherine Boone earned the win with six saves for the Flyers.
In the first half Cal Poly managed eight shots against the Flyers after totaling six in the win over Cincinnati on Friday.
The Mustangs came out strong with Afton Thulin having a shot blocked from the top of the box. Cici Kobinski followed up followed up with one close in that went wide.
But after a pair of shots by the Mustangs in the 21st minute Dayton's Colleen Williams put her shot from the from the far left wing into the back of the net after a pass from Juliana Libertin giving the Flyers a 1-0 lead in the 24th minute.
During the final minute of play of the half Williams scored her second goal of the game and her fourth of the young season when she put a header in the net off a cross by Kelsey Smigel.
There was a 30 minute delay midway through the half due to thunderstorms.
In the second period Dayton made it 3-0 in the 75th minute when Libertin took the throw in from Williams and dribbled the ball up the middle and took her shot from within the box.
The Mustangs made it 3-1 in the 82nd minute when Allie Begin beat the goalie one on one after a crisp pass from Kobinski.
The Mustangs return to the field on Aug 26th when they travel to Cal State Bakersfield for a 7:00 pm game.
